Default Fraud.SecurityTool found in Outlook pst archives during right click scan

Some of the symptoms described here were experienced by me.

    INCIDENT

I was using Firefox 3.5.7 and Chrome 3.0.195.38 at the time but not IE 8 which is on my computer. What appeared to be an anti-virus scanner flashed up on my screen and appeared to discover 34+ viruses. It then said I needed to upgrade to the paid version in order to remove the viruses. However, when I went to pay for the paid version to remove the viruses, IE was blocked!

Unlike the symptoms described in the link, it did not hide my desktop icons.

    INITIAL STEPS

Ran full antivirus and spyware scans and computer came back clean.

At the time not able to find anything on google, I disinstalled and reinstalled IE 8 hoping that would at least allow me to run Windows based virus detection software like f-secure or symantec.

Despite that, IE is still disabled, and now Chrome is disabled too. Firefox still works.

It was only after prepping for a full reformat and backing up files in the hopes of one day being able to salvage them that I ran a right click scan on my Outlook archives and discovered Fraud.SecurityTool in several PST files, despite the full S&D scans coming up clean.

    MACHINE

Machine is Windows XP, and I run AVG Anti-Virus Free 8.5.* with automatic updates, Windows Defender, Spywareblaster with manual biweekly updates, automatic Microsoft updating, Zonealarm Firewall, and Spybot S&D 1.6.2 Resident with manual biweekly updates and full scans.

    INITIAL DIAGNOSTICS

After disabling S&D Resident, I rebooted, backed up registry with ERUNT and ran hijackthis.log:

Just did a full rescan and found fraud.sysguard registry change and executable file. Allowed Spybot S&D to remove them.

Did a right click scan of the Outlook pst files and it was not discovered again. Hopefully I've solved my own problem!

IE is still disabled. I already reinstalled it once. Please let me know if this is related to the malware somehow, thanks.

    Hi,

    Let's have a closer look.

Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here or here or here.
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
    • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
      1. DDS.txt
      2. Attach.txt
    • Save both reports to your desktop. Post them back to your topic.

Download GMER here by clicking download exe -button and then saving it your desktop:
    • Double-click .exe that you downloaded
    • Click rootkit-tab and then scan.
    • Don't check
      Show All
      box while scanning in progress!
    • When scanning is ready, click Copy.
    • This copies log to clipboard
    • Post log (if the log is long, archive it into a zip file and attach instead of posting) in your reply.

I thought I already posted another followup to this thread with a link to the information that I followed to clean my machine.

IE and Chrome were disabled. After thoroughly checking my registry for certain dll files which the malware uses to disable IE, I reinstalled IE and Chrome and they are now up and running again. Thanks for your time.
