    Default Spybot S&D scan runs slowly - 35 hours+

Spybot S&D v1.6.2.46 on a Win7 Enterprise 64-bit machine with 3 gig of ram takes over 35 hours to run.

    I close the browser first.
I run Windows Disk Cleanup first to remove junk files.
I empty the trash bin in my email.

I also have McAfee Total Protection and Ad-Aware installed with real-time scanning on. I run McAfee first, then Ad-Aware, then Spybot. McAfee and Ad-Aware run 5-7 hours each. There are a little over 705,000 of files on my system.

    There are no other problems.

Should I turn off real-time scanning for McAfee and Ad-Aware while running Spybot? Is there something else I can try?

Is Spybot-S&D on a corporate computer?

    Best regards.

No. It's a home-grown machine with a SuperMicro server mobo with twin Xeon processors. One of the items on my bucket list is to learn 3D animation, and the more horsepower, the better.

Spybot-S&D was running ludicrously slowly under Windows XP x86 also, before I upgraded to Win7 x64.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks.

The reason I asked is because Win7 Enterprise is obtained via Microsoft Volume Licensing and Spybot-S&D is free for personal use only.

Is that your average scan time with those programs?

    Scanning or real time protection?

    Best regards.

    Ahhhh, now I understand.

I got Win7 x64 Enterprise from the community college where I'm taking Computer Science courses. They're Microsoft Partners, so I can get most anything Microsoft puts out for free.

Yes, 5-7 hours is the average time with McAfee and Ad-Aware.

I meant real-time protection. Is it possible that each time I run a scan with Spybot-S&D, McAfee and Ad-Aware are looking over Spybot's shoulder, so to speak?

AFAIK Ad-Aware versions are "Free, Pro and Total Protection" which all appear to include Essential Internet Protection with antivirus & antispyware.

If you are running that anti virus as well as McAfee Total Protection then the following applies.

Rule of thumb is one firewall/one anti virus program resident to avoid conflicts, loss of program efficiency and system lock up due to both software products attempting to access the same file at the same time.

Having more than one resident can cause system performance problems and a serious system slowdown.

    Does that ring a bell?

The tintinnabulatory content of my auditory input has increased.

I have the free versions of Ad-Aware and Spybot-S&D and McAfee Total Protection. Should I drop Ad-Aware or Spybot-S&D or McAfee, or what?

Spybot-S&D is not an anti virus program. The application searches for spyware, malware, adware, trojans, hijackers and keyloggers.

If you have two anti virus programs one of those can be disabled or removed but which one is your choice.
