Hi,
- Click Start > Run type Notepad click OK.
- This will open an empty Notepad file.
- Copy/Paste the contents of the box below into Notepad.
Code:@echo off regedit.exe /e "%userprofile%\Desktop\look.txt" "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\BFE" Notepad.exe %userprofile%\Desktop\look.txt Del look.txt Del %0- Click Format and ensure Wordwrap is unchecked.
- Save as RegExp.bat
- Save as file type All Files or it won't work.
- Now double click on RegExp.bat to run it.
- A file look.txt will open on your Desktop, please post the contents in your next reply.
Hi Jeff,
I run the file and the text file opened (it was created newly) but it was empty, no report or log of any kind showed up in it.
Hi,
Thanks for running that earlier. You did just fine.
----------
Please download Farbar Service Scanner and run it on the computer with the issue.
- Make sure "Windows Firewall" option remains checked.
- Press "Scan".
- It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
- Please copy and paste the log to your reply.

I need to give back that laptop soon, could you tell me how to uninstall comboFix? Thanks
Hi sruefer,
It seems that the infection that you had harmed some registry keys that will need to be fixed. If you are satisfied with how the system is running though I can help you clean up our tools though. Just let me know what you want to do.
If it's possible to fix the registry keys then let's do it; if it is a major headache then I can install a third party Firewall instead. In any case, the infection seems to be gone, great job!
Hi sruefer,
Ok I was able to get copies of the registry keys that you are missing.
----------
Please download and run ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT). This program allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed. The standard registry backup options that come with Windows back up most of the registry but not all of it. ERUNT however creates a complete backup set, including the Security hive and user related sections. ERUNT is easy to use and since it creates a full backup, there are no options or choices other than to select the location of the backup files. The backup set includes a small executable that will launch the registry restore if needed. **Remember if you are using Windows Vista as your operating system right-click the executable and Run as Administrator.
----------
I have attached two files that you will need to download and save to your Desktop. Once they are downloaded and AFTER you have ran ERUNT, right-click on each one, one at a time, and select Extract All. Once you have extracted the file, please right click on the .reg file and select Merge. Allow the merge to complete and then reboot. Perform the same steps for the other .reg file. If you have ANY questions please ask before taking any steps.
----------
Now run Farbar Service Scanner again and post the new log.
Hi Jeff,
I run the merges and the FSS scan again; however, the Firewall is still not activating when trying to do so from the Control Panel :(
