    Default Smitfraud.C-Toolbar888 (and maybe more)

A scan of my Windows XP pc with Spybot shows the following entry:

    Smitfraud.C-Toolbar888
    executable
    C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Local Settings\Temp\removalfile.bat

After being informed that this was NOT a false positive in the False Positive forums, I followed the "Before you Post" steps as follows:

    1. I ran an online scan of Panda ActiveScan and received a message stating that I had two "Hacking Tools & Rootkits" found. As an aside, it scanned about 4 million files! I'm fairly certain I didn't put 4 million in there. The log:

    a. Potentially unwanted tool:Application/Processor
    C:\Downloads\VirtumundoBeGone.exe[²PĒ]

    b. Potentially unwanted tool:Application/MyWay
    C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\SrchAsDe\deSrcAs.dll

    2. I then rebooted in safe mode, ran Spybot, and received a message that I had "Smitfraud.C-Toolbar888"

I had Spybot fix the problem and then rebooted into windows.

    3. I then downloaded highjackthis.exe and ran it. Here is my log:

Hi, welcome to Safer Networking Forums!

Please follow the instrcutions HERE on how to remove Dell's MyWay.

*Open HijackThis > choose Scan Only > Place a checkmark in the boxes beside these entries in bold.

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dell4me.com/mywaybiz
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://mysearch.myway.com/jsp/dellsidebar.jsp?p=DE

Did you add the following policies using spybot? If not, fix them.

    O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
    O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

Close your browsers and all open windows except for HijackThis, then click "Fix checked".

    *Download Superantispyware
    • Load Superantispyware and click the check for updates button.
    • Once the update is finished click the scan your computer button.
    • Check Perform Complete Scan and then next.
    • Superantispyware will now scan your computer and when its finished it will list all the infections it has found.
    • Make sure that they all have a check next to them and press next.
    • Click finish and you will be taken back to the main interface.
    • Click Preferences and then click the statistics/logs tab. Click the dated log and press view log and a text file will appear.
    • Copy and paste the log onto the forum along with a fresh HijackThis log and a description on how your machine is running.

Thanks for the welcome and most importantly, for your time!

    1. I removed the Dell MyWay

    2. I ran hijackthis.exe - the only entry I found of the ones you asked me to check was this one:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dell4me.com/mywaybiz

I checked the box and fixed it. Note that I did use Spybot to fix the following items so I did NOT fix them:

    O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
    O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

    3. I ran Superantispyware - the log is as follows:

    SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log
    Generated 01/30/2007 at 08:32 AM

    Application Version : 3.5.1016

Core Rules Database Version : 3175
    Trace Rules Database Version: 1185

    Scan type : Complete Scan
    Total Scan Time : 00:35:14

    Memory items scanned : 402
    Memory threats detected : 0
    Registry items scanned : 6449
    Registry threats detected : 0
    File items scanned : 43704
    File threats detected : 1

    Trojan.Unknown Origin
    C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\CHUCK EDWARDS\LOCAL SETTINGS\TEMP\NSM1F2.TMP\SYSTEM.DLL

I was prompted to reboot to remove this item and did so.

    4. Finally, I ran a fresh hijackthis log as follows:

    5. As for my pc, it is running just fine. I never had any issues with the way it was running, accordingly, when Spybot gave me the Smitfraud.C-Toolbar888 warning I thought it may have been a false positive as I had seen no indications of it from my system's performance.

Again. Thank you so much - What do you think?

    That's great!

    Your log looks clean now!

Your Java is out of date....
Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components.
    • Click Start > Control Panel
    • Click Add/Remove Programs
    • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    • Click the Remove button.
    • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove all versions of Java.
    • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then download Java Runtime Environment 6, and install it to your computer.

    Congratulations! Your log looks clean!

Configure Windows Xp to hide system files:

This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:
    • Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
    • Select Create a restore point, and Ok it.
    • Next, go to Start > Run and type in cleanmgr
    • Select the More options tab
    • Choose the option to clean up system restore and OK it.

This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.

Fabulous! I cannot thank you enough for all your help. It's truly outstanding that I received amazingly responsive personalized help in such a short time frame!

As such, I promptly donated $50.00 today via Paypal - I certainly feel that I got the better end of the bargain. Thanks again so much for your help. Superb service with a smile is very rare....
