    Red face My desktop shortcuts don't work!

    Another pc on my network found the BHO_MYWAY malware using the TrendMicro online scan about three weeks ago. I cleaned it off using TrendMicro and I had no more problems....

    Until today when my sound stopped working and then all my desktop shortcuts failed to work.....

    So, following the steps to take before you post, here are the results of the scans - Note that I had to reboot using safe mode since my pc would not allow me to use the desktop shortcuts or the start button:

    In safe mode I ran the following scans:

    *************
    Panda came back clean

    **************

    Spybot Search and Destroy, run in safe mode, displayed the following results:

    --- Search result list ---
    Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter.AntiVirusDisableNotify: Settings (Registry change, nothing done)
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center\AntiVirusDisableNotify!=dword:0

    Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter.FirewallDisableNotify: Settings (Registry change, nothing done)
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center\FirewallDisableNotify!=dword:0

    TrendMicro, run in safe mode, showed the following two items:

    adware_funwebproducts
    adware_bho_myway

    I used TrendMicro to delete these items. It did so succesfully and I then ran TrendMicro again, and it came back with no items found.

    When I rebooted, no longer in safe mode, the svc services (I think) terminated and the pc stopped responding. I rebooted again, and then the pc worked normally. I then downloaded and ran hijack this with the following results:

    Default No further problems..

    The PC hasn't had any more problems..... since my online scan and clean up. So, unless I hear otherwise, I shall assume my hijack this log also shows clean...

    Welcome back and sorry for the wait. These logs are many and the volunteers are few.

    Let me give you this information first: Why does Spybot-S&D flag changes in the Windows Security Center?

    Your HJT log is clean, those items Trend removed are adware but you still did the right thing, they do not belong on your computer. They may have been bundled with something else, make sure you instruct all users to read all EULA agreements, just don't click past it. Often adware programs will be described and you can opt out of that portion of the download.

    Thanks and safe surfing

    Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

    Default Great!!

    Thanks so much for the review.... I know y'all are swamped. This site, actually, perhaps more accurately, the people that volunteer here, are invaluable.

    Thanks again!
