    Question Regcleaner - parasite/virus?!

    Hello virus-dislikers!

I just updated SB's databases and ran the scanner. Guess what - it defined my Regcleaner (i assume you're acquainted with this very popular and handy program) as a PARASITE !!! I haven't had any viruses for a long time and just a few parasites and am pretty sure that Regcleaner is not infected by any other hostile program. Regcleaner itself is harmless (one of the most harmless programs ever), so what can be the problem? Any ideas?

    Thank you!

    German dude

No I am not since you didn't mention the actual detection that you received.

Getting an answer is one thing, learning is another.

Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition running on a 2.40GHz IntelŪ PentiumŪ 4 Processor with 512 MB of RAM and a 533 MHz System Bus.

I think the smart-a** is the person who expects help and won't answer a civil request for more information.

    Cool down.

    I encountered the same problem.
RegCleaner4.3 by Jouni Vuorio is indeed a very(old) helpful proggi. No need to argue about.
Is is detected bei the last "beta" update as malware, no idea why.

It is added now to the long list of exclusions in Spybot 1.6 ..........

They state to be an anti-spyware tool but employ questionable advertising methods: In the form of a PopUp they offer a scan of your system. They refer you to an infection of viruses and spyware on your system which is actually not true, because the listed items are not really on your pc. After downloading the software you can only scan for the threats. If the threats (pseudo-infections) are detected you have to register first and pay (up to $30) in order to remove them. Some of these dubious anti-spyware tools do also create a toolbar in IE and create recurring PopUps.

More dubious anti-spyware tools you will find here:

    Sandra,

Thank you for the detailed reply... but aren't we talking about RegCleaner - a very simplified version of RegEdit - it only allows you to see your start-up list, MANUALLY clean registry and uninstall programs? Like i said, it's one of the most harmless programs ever, it cannot be possibly considered as a anti-spyware. Well, if RegCleaner IS eventually considered to be an ani-spyware, then Volkov Commander (VC) should be granted the status of an Operating System.

Anyway, is there any chance you could reconsider the contents of the last "beta" update?

    barbossa,

Thank you! You are right - "beta" updates can be very tricky and can damage existing innocent programs, if trusted.

So the result of all this heated blather is . . . ? Is Spybot right or wrong about RegCleaner?

Wrong. If you consider RegCleaner to be a malware, then you should definitely treat all other (and way much more advanced!) PC repair/management programs (say, Ioio System Mechanic) the same way. RegEdit, following this logic, is a massive and extremely dangerous virus and Microsoft should be forced to immediately remove it from all its operating systems.

To remove RegCleaner from the SB's parasite-detection-list:
    1. Switch SB to Advanced Mode
    2. Click on "Settings" (drop-down menu on your left)
    3. Choose "Ignore products"
    4. Find and activate "RegCleanr"

I haven't received any "CIVIL request for more information".

    Hello,
If you are talking about RegCleaner by Jouni Vuorio: It is a false positive and will be fixed with our next update schedules for Wednesday.

    Best regards,
    Markus
