    Default Pupsc

    Hi
I have read the other threads on this subject, but it seems very complicated and time consuming to rectify.
I did a scan a couple of weeks ago and 30 PUPSC were found. I clicked on 'Fix these problems' and deleted all the instances. When I rebooted I had 3 error messages to say some things had not worked on Startup. But clicked on 'Ignore' and finally everything I needed was loaded. One message related to Symantec, and as I do not use their programs, that was OK, and another couple related to the Ask Toolbar, which I also do not use. I did lose the BBC iPlayer icon but that was about it and everything else seemed to work OK.
When I next turned on the same things happened, which was a bit annoying, so I went back to a previous restore point and I am happy.
My question is, are these PUPSC a real threat? My computer is working OK, so it seems, and I am reluctant to change any registry entries as I know this can affect the computer working properly if you delete the wrong ones.
I have Windows XP, I am not using half my capacity, so do not need any more disc space or RAM.
Hope someone can shed some light for me

Generally, a PUP (Possibly Unwanted Program) are items that are stored in the computer that is unnecessary or unwanted. It'll be up to the users choice whether to remove them or not. Some users may want to remove it because some are unnecessary toolbars (like the Ask.com toolbar) and some maybe potential spyware.

You could have undo-ed the fix either way, System Restore or you could have used the Recovery option in Spybot to undo it. Since there were no more prompts after the System Restore, I can guess that all the other 27 PUPs were restored too.

    Default Pupsc

    Hi Drragostea,
Thanks for the reply. I did another scan yesterday and the 30 PUPs are back. I also did a scan with PC Tools Spyware Doctor but it came up clean, so either it missed any spyware or I do not have the problems that others seem to be having, and my PUPS are only unwanted programs and not problematical.
I may delete one by one and reboot each time. May be time consuming but I can then isolate those that create a loading issue and then decide.
    Thanks again

It is up to you, because even though it may take some time, it's worth the effort and ridding them for all.

I recall that PCTools Spyware Doctor detects MRU and cookies too, but I don't think they detect PUPs.

    Safe surfing.

The scan shows 30 PUPSC against an entry for 'MyWay.MyWayWebSearch', which is what others are finding. I normally run a scan, then go away for a while and come back when it has finished, but today I stayed and noticed that the 'My Way' problem was logged as the scan was going through a bot-check on various 'casino' entries. Prior to this there was an entry for 'PornBHU.ru'. I have never visited an online casino site or a porn site, let alone one in Russia, so it seems to have been downloaded via another site. I know a great deal of viruses emanate from Russia.
I can find no reference to 'Virtumonde' but that is not to say I do not have it, so if you will help, it would be a good idea to check my system.
    Thanks

    Hi hornet,

It would be a good idea to open a new thread in the Malware Removal Forum. An Expert can help you there :

    Hello,

You can edit the ignore list in the “Settings“ module to exclude a product from further searches. In order to do so you have to run the Start Center, switch to advance mode and start Settings. Now browse to the “Ignore List“ tab. Via the “Add“ button you will get a list of products to be excluded. Just select the product you want to exclude and hit “OK“.
Settings can also be launched via SDTray (the small Spybot – Search & Destroy icon beside your systems clock in the taskbar).

    Best regards
