Announcing betas: TeaTimer / Updater / Vista integration

We are proud to announce new versions of miscellaneous tools are now available for beta testing!

Scanning engine

This update cannot be disabled in the download package below; it is not only used if you install TeaTimer, but by the main Spybot-S&D scanner as well. The methods available to detect malware have been more than doubled, including new ways to generically detect malware mutations.

TeaTimer

Aside from the fix of the graphical glitch so many users have been waiting for, there have been some important changes under the hood, which will reduce the number of change dialogs where the user has to decide.
TeaTimer now automatically allows any changes during the installation of other security software which follow the ASCs guideline of code-signing all files, as well as a much improved scan of the files associated with registry changes.

Vista Security Center

The Windows Security Center included with Windows Vista has a dedicated entry for malware protection software.
Microsoft ships Windows Defender with Vista, however, Spybot-S&D can now easily integrate into the Vista Security Center; which will then monitor if Spybot-S&D is up-to-date and whether the permanent protection (TeaTimer) is running or not.
This update will only show on Vista systems, since previous Windows versions do not offer anti malware integration into WSC.

Great news! Spybot hasn't really been updated for a while, apart from definitions. I'm curious to know if this integration with Windows Vista is also available on XP?

djpailo,

TeMerc,

You must install over Spybot S&D 1.4, since this beta install only includes the components mentioned. It's meant as a file refresh, not a complete install.

argh sorry :red:

1.5 beta scanning engine

I have installed the scanning engine improvement but preferred to skip the Teatimer. However on checking the 'About' info, it stills states 1.4 there not 1.5 beta. Is that ok?

The old TeaTimer has that ugly glitch that makes it difficult to click the buttons, so I would really replace it ;)
The version number shown by Spybot-S&D will still be 1.4, that's ok. Spybot-S&D itself doesn't really show the engine version (yet) I'm afraid. The main user interface will be updated as soon as more changes for Vista have been implemented :)

Regarding XP: should a future XP service pack include an anti-malware option in the Security Center as well, we'll try to make an update very fast.

Oh, and if this should be bug-free (and after that much bug testing, we really hope that), it'll be available through the integrated update soon as well of course.

1.5 beta scanner

I don't use the Teatimer facility, just the scanner as a backup, once a week; which itself is an excellent program. Incidentally, I found the speed of the scanning noticably faster after the 1.5 beta upgrade.

Two issues I've run into.

1. My AV program (AVG Pro) flags the beta exe as some sort of malware. As a result I can't even download it using the IE7 download manager. However, I was able to d/l it using Flashget.

2. It still says version 1.4 within Spybot. Is it supposed to say 1.5?

From the following post by the developer, PepiMK, earlier in this thread:

Strange. My AVG Home edition didn't flag anything. :bigthumb:

I have noticed fast scanning, infact, to me its actually got slower.

@streetwolf: do you have a screenshot of that? If so, I'll bug AVG immediately with it :)

@djpailo: that depends I guess. On the one hand, there are some improved mechanisms in there speeding things up. On the other hand, last fridays update may already make use of a few of the new mechanisms. The authenticode scan e.g. is now more thorough, since some bad files were signed with a tricky method aimed at hiding the certificate from scanners. So I guess speed improvements or decreases may depend on individual configurations, can't say that in general.

here are the two notifications that avg 7.5 pro gives me after downloading the exe:

speaking of future XP SPs PepiMK, windows xp service pack 3 is scheduled to be released sometime in the first half of 2008 as noted on the Windows Service Pack Road Map page:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/lifecycle/servicepacks.mspx

it's still unclear whether or not Microsoft will actually include an "anti-malware" option in Windows Security Center for the next XP service pack.

Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2, on the other hand, is in the release candidate stage and will be officially released sometime in 2007.

also, I'll have to test TeaTimer 1.5 beta on a Win95 machine to see if it works. I remember that TeaTimer 1.4 does not work under Win95.
