Another Virtumonde Victim

Apparantly I have the Virtumonde (or Vundo???) virus as well. Because I am dramtically illiterate when it comes to anything behind this screen, I visited a few discussion sights and used their advice to download AVG and SPYBOT. They both appear to find things that, like most of the posts I have read, keep coming back. I need help or I mayrn my house down when I am destroying this computer!!!

Again, I am VERY computer illiterate. Please use directions like 'Take out the round, shiny key, and insert it into the vertical slit in the dashboard, and then rotate the key clockwise', as opposed to, 'start your car's engine', whenever possible.

Run this online scan from ESET

You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan!

• First, accept the Terms of Use
• Click: Start
• When asked, allow the ActiveX control to install
• Click: Start
• Make sure the options:
  Remove found threats, and Scan unwanted applications
  are both checked!
• Click: Scan

When the scan finishes, use Notepad to open the ESET report.

Getting/Staying Online is a Problem

LE,

I have an issue getting and staying online with the compter that has the Trojan. The only way to get online is to do a SPYBOT scan in safe mode and correct the 3 Virtumonde problems. Then, in normal mode, I can get online and initiate the Eset scan. But, as with the Kaspersky scan, Internet Explorer shuts down at some point during the scan. This time, IE shut down when the Eset scan was near 100% complete.

Two RUNDLL error messages came up in normal mode when I first started up the computer (and couldn't get online), saying that 2 .dll modules could not be found.

I understand that I am not supposed to do any fixes other than what you tell me but, I had to do the SPYBOT scan/fix just to get online.

How can I provide you with the information/log that you asked for? Or...what the heck can I provide now?

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download.
It must be saved directly to your desktop.


1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

• Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan.
• Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
• Remember to re enable the protection again afterwards before connecting to the net

2. Close any open browsers and make sure you are disconnected from the net. Unplug the cable if need be before running combofix.

• IF you have not already done so Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet when it starts.
• If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

3. Now double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review


Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze.

Then download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt

As of today (offline), start up is still rather slow, but programs open and function well and at an acceptable speed.

HISTORY: Before we noticed the Trojan, the computer was pretty sluggish anyway (I thinks that maybe too many things are running at once from start-up ???). After we noticed the Trojan, it took over and pretty much halted anything we tried to do.
