browser hijacked, IE not responding, pc freezing up (Resolved)

Hello.

First, Spybot S&D found and fixed this:
name: win32.autoit.D
file: windows\system32\swxcacls.exc
registry change: HKEY...IE\phishing filter\enabled(is not)

which should be a malware that disables phishing filter (was fixed).

Windows internet browser is then, from certain websites, redirected to a "search" webpage for mortgage loans, that cannot be navigated away from.

The IE browser is furthermore often non responding, freezing up the entire computer, leading me to have to restart it.

(I also, on most computer start up, get the yellow windows update icon, but it will show dowloading updates 0% and then dissapear without downloading)

(( a little note that I can't get rid of the apple mobile device from add/remove programs, this once belonges to a mp3 player))

Spybot S&D, and avast did not find anything else, then.

I downloaded ccleaner and cleaned my computer of all "non-advanced" item settings, mostly cookies.

I ran hijack this 2.0.2. ( I know I shouldn't have !!) and deleted two nameless browser helper objects ( as previously done on other virus infection occasions) and one nameless start up item that HJT defined as possibly a trojan ( sorry I know I shouldn't have)

I have windows XP - service pack 2
avast antivirus free edition
windows firewall - on
spyware blaster 4.1
spyware guard v2.2
spybot S&D - with new updates - resident and tea timer are normally active

Here's the HJT log, version 2.0.2 - ( I have dowloaded and saved the registry with ERUNT) :

IE not responding at download.cnet

Download.cnet freezes up the IE

I tried downloading via your first link, both denying and then accepting the two cookie requests before actually downloading from that page.
after clicking "download", Internet explorer goes into "not responding" mode, and down in the left corner it says :
" waiting for http://download.cnet/html/rb/dl/cookieXfer.html?... "

I don't know how to make IE work at that webpage - I have tried looking at the security/privacy settings and cookies allowed in the internet options menu in IE.. Can you please help ?

Thanks very much

2 more logfiles ready

Hi again.

What were the results for the two first programs ( hijack this and the other one ) ?

Here are the combofix logfile and the malwarebyte anti-malware (which I found at another websites that IE didn't have problems with). anti-malware removed a file in windows sytem 32 named \mcrh.tmp, and I don't know if combofix changed anything - I did get a message about a start page being changed to microsoft (that I don't understand since IE startpage is still google.. ? ) :

that last file is still in quarantine - should I delete it manually from the quarantine ?

Thanks !! :)

1)What were the results for the two first programs ( hijack this and the other one ) ?
2) I don't know if combofix changed anything -
3)that last file is still in quarantine - should I delete it manually from the quarantine ?
1) HJT and RSIT are just diagnostic tools to tell us what is present and give an idea which tool to use next.
They don't fix anything on their own.

2) Combofix deleted 27 Vundo files :)
3) No need, it is safe in Quarantine.

That looks good now, just a couple of things to tidy up :)
Let's have a last scan to make sure we get everything in the last sweep.
How are things running now ?

Kaspersky Online Scanner .
Your Antivirus and/or Antispyware may give a warning during the scan. This is perfectly normal
NOTE:- This scan is best done from IE (Internet Explorer)

NOTE:- Vista users should start IE by Start(Vista Orb) >> Internet Explorer >> Right-Click Run As Admin
Go Here http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html

Read the Requirements and limitations before you click Accept.
Once the database has downloaded, click My Computer in the left pane
Now go and put the kettle on !
When the scan has completed, click Save Report As...
Enter a name for the file in the Filename: text box and then click the down arrow to the right of Save as type: and select text file (*.txt)
Click Save - by default the file will be saved to your Desktop, but you can change this if you wish.

**Note**

To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs.
  • Turn off the real-time scanner of all antivirus or antispyware programs while performing the online scan.
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75%. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

Hello Kantana

Thanks for all your help and the quick reply :-)

I have a couple of concerns, though :

1. The last time I was in here with a virus problem, it was the same virus ! So maybe we need to make extra sure that it is removed completely this time !!?? I guess it was never removed the last time since I kept having problems afterwards..

2. I don't remember - how much damage does VUNDO do ?? / can I expect it do have already done to my pc ?? Are my bank security files etc in any danger ? What sort of virus is it ?

3. What was that tracking malware that anti-malware found - how serious is it ?

4. I will run Kaspersky next - but I did that on several occasions before posting here in this forum and it never finds anything ! But maybe you can read something from the log files afterwards that will be usefull.

Thanks again for your help !!! :bigthumb:

Kaspersky didn't find anything - so no log to report. I did a scan of "my computer" and not "critical ares" - I assume "my computer" scan covers everything ?

The warning message that I wrote about that I got from Spyguard after running combofix was this :

Browser hijack alert - browser page changed
HCKU\software\microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\
Value Name: search page
old value: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=54896
new value: http://go.microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dll?prd=ie&ar=iesearch
I accepted the value change since it was changed by combofix

However, I looked up vundo on wikipedia and found a lot of problems described that are the problems I have.
The article also described that dll files attach to winlogon and explorer.exe or isass.exe, therefore I am unsure whether the "isa" in the new value name is vundo inserting itself again ??

I have had problems with starting up spybot search and deatroy, it can't be opened untill the nth time I open it - I read that this could be caused by vundo - it can infect the tea timer ?
I also receive an error message when trying to update to windows security package 3, the message is about the registry.
I also had to delete the program ad aware completely because I was denyed to download the latest update
I also keep getting messages about my virtual memory being too low - I read vundo could
I noticed that you didn't want to remove the nameless BHO that hijack this found ??

(Maybe I removed some of vundo when I ran ccleaner before I approached this forum, but parts are still there)
( should I do similar scans on my guest user accounts as well or just mine / administrator)?

I just want to make sure that all of the virus is removed - I read vundo can attach dll's to winlogon, explorer.exe and isass.exe and creates. Have we cleaned all of those and also, BHOs, CLASS IDs in windos registry ?

Right, let's see if I can cover all your questions ( if I miss any, just let me know )

1. The last time I was in here with a virus problem,~ I guess it was never removed the last time
Vundo is very easy to get, so it is probably a new infection

2. I don't remember - how much damage does VUNDO do ?? / can I expect it do have already done to my pc ?? Are my bank security files etc in any danger ? What sort of virus is it ?
Any damage should have been repaired by the tools we used. Your bank files/passwords should be safe, as it is an advertising junk.

3. What was that tracking malware that anti-malware found - how serious is it ?
If you mean "Malware.Trace", that just means a Trace of Malware, ie. a leftover

4. I did a scan of "my computer" and not "critical ares" - I assume "my computer" scan covers everything ?
Yes, that's fine :)

5. The warning message that I wrote about that I got from Spyguard after running combofix was this :
~
The article also described that dll files attach to winlogon and explorer.exe or isass.exe, therefore I am unsure whether the "isa" in the new value name is vundo inserting itself again ??
It isn't isass.exe, it is Lsass so there is nothing to worry about there

6. I have had problems with starting up spybot search and deatroy, it can't be opened untill the nth time I open it - I read that this could be caused by vundo - it can infect the tea timer ?
Active infections can prevent Spybot from running, but they don't infect Teatimer.
TeaTimer monitors the registry and stores any changes in a "memory", Vundo changes the registry and this can lead to "bad" changes being stored in Teatimer memory.

7. I also receive an error message when trying to update to windows security package 3, the message is about the registry.
What does the message say ?

8. I also had to delete the program ad aware completely because I was denyed to download the latest update
It's not a dramatic loss, but you could try reinstalling it if you want

9. I also keep getting messages about my virtual memory being too low - I read vundo could
Because it uses a lot of memory

10. I noticed that you didn't want to remove the nameless BHO that hijack this found ??
Sorry, I don't see which one you mean ?

11. Maybe I removed some of vundo when I ran ccleaner before I approached this forum, but parts are still there
CCleaner won't do anything to remove Vundo, it just clears unneeded files

12. should I do similar scans on my guest user accounts as well ?
Not unless you use the Guest account

13. I just want to make sure that all of the virus is removed -
Don't worry, when I finish there will be no active infection on your machine :)

Okay so here's the combofix anf virus total logs.

After running combofix my pc is really slow and freezes up when I want to look at the task manager and start up programs. I also can't start up Spywareguard again.
Applemobile device is still on the task manager menu as running - I think you wanted to delete it with combofix ? Don't know what I did when I put those apple files and adobe files into combofix ? (Apple mobile device is a leftover from an old program that I don't use and can't get rid of - why did you want to do something to the adobe ? )

I meant the BHOs in the first hijack this log that have random names / nameless - should they be deleted ?

task manager missing buttons and pages

Hi I'm sorry to be posting again. But I just noticed now what is wrong with task manager..
Task manager looks amputated, i.e. the top options bar with the different options of file menu / different viewing pages is not there. Task manager now only consists of the list of processes - there is even not a close "button" at the top right corner.
At the bottom of the task manager window, the normal number of running processes is not there anymore.

thanks for helping

I also can't start up Spywareguard again.
Don't know what I did when I put those apple files and adobe files into combofix ?
You may need to re-install Spywareguard, but leave that until we are finished.
Those were just some unneeded files and registry entries that I deleted with Combofix

combofix writes that I have comodo firewall but I don't to my knowledge !?
It is just a leftover entry in the registry that makes Combofix think that Comodo is still installed.

I meant the BHOs in the first hijack this log that have random names / nameless - should they be deleted ?
They are harmless
