hello,

I'm helping a friend clean his machine up, and I'm stuck on some spyware.

now i ran spybot in both safe mode and regular mode and i cannot clean out a few items that keep popping up.

now in safe mode i found 20 additional items and most of that got removed but again some were not as nice.

the following are the items that would not remove itself:

*look2up.topconverting
*command service

now i did run hijackthis as you instructed and below is the results of that:

Hi edlomon and welcome to spybot.info :)

There is some infections....

Create a new folder named HijackThis for HijackThis.exe. Move Hijackthis.exe into that folder.

Please download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Also post a fresh HijackThis log and yes, please take it from the normal mode.

Hi again, good :)

Now we'll continue...

(You haven't set any items to HijackThis ignorelist, right ?)

Disable Spybot S&D Teatimer (it may interfere with the cleaning process and we'll enable it when you're clean)
  • Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode
  • If it is not already set to do this, go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
  • On the left hand side, click on Tools
  • Then click on the Resident icon in the list
  • Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
  • Restart your computer
Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new Hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

Note : Once the PC has restarted if a log does not appear or the icons didn't disappear, run the "second.bat" located inside the L2mfix folder.

ok i ran it and 2 things from the system 32 folder got detected on my anti virus so i healed the files(hope was the correct thing to do)

again both logs are attached for length reasons.

thank you :)

Hi again, it is looking clean now :)

You don't seem to a firewall running, you must install one firewall.
NOTE: If you're using Windows XP firewall, I recommend that you install a better firewall. Windows firewall doesn't really provide enough protection.
Disable Windows firewall after installing a new firewall.

These are good (free) firewalls:
Now you can enable Spybot S&D Teatimer again.
  • Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode
  • If it is not already set to do this, go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
  • On the left hand side, click on Tools
  • Then click on the Resident icon in the list
  • Check "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
  • Restart your computer

Now you can clean AVG's Quarantine:
  • Open AVG Anti-Spyware
  • Click Infections
  • Click Quarantine tab
  • Click Select all
  • Click Remove finally
  • Close the program
You can remove the tools we used during the cleaning process.

You can remove the following backup folder:
C:\!KillBox

Now you can make your hidden files hidden again.
  • Go to My Computer
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options
  • Click the View tab.
  • Checkmark the "Display the contents of system folders"
  • Under the Hidden files and folders select "Show hidden files and folders"
  • Check "Hide protected operating system files"
  • Click Apply and then the OK and close My Computer.

=============

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Clear your system restore
This will clear the system restore folders from possible malware that was left behind during the cleaning process.
  • Use ATF Cleaner
Download and install ATF Cleaner. Clean your temporary files & folders with it regularly.
  • Use Ad-Aware
Download and install Ad-Aware. Update it and scan your computer regularly with it.
  • Use AVG Anti-Spyware
Update it and scan your computer regularly with it.
  • Use Spybot S&D
Download and install Spybot S&D. Update it and scan your computer regularly with it.
  • Install SpywareBlaster
SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Install MVPS Hosts file
This prevents your computer from connecting to harmful sites.
  • Use Firefox browser
Firefox is faster, safer and better browser than Internet Explorer.
  • Keep your systen up-to-date
    Visit Windows Update regularly.
  • Keep your antivirus and firewall up-to-date
Scan your computer regularly with your antivirus.
  • Read this article by TonyKlein
So how did I get infected in the first place?
  • Stand Up and Be Counted !
The site offers people who have been (or are) victims of malware the opportunity to document their story and, in that way, launch a complaint against the malware and the makers of the malware.

Stay clean and be safe ;)

ok i will install one of those firewalls today then.

thank you very much for taking the time to help me fix my machine :)
