Im on Windows Xp and have used Spybot S&D for awhile now. I went to run the program tonight and got the following message:

Access violation at address 74E3EA83. Read of address 8B08558C

I hit okay and then got the following:

Error creating window.

I uninstalled Spybot S&D and reinstalled but got the same message.
I havent changed anything on my machine prior to this, any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

TT

If the problem is not Hyperthreading Technology related read on, otherwise please ignore this post.

I really don’t know if either of the following suggestions will help eliminate the problem that you are having, but since it appears that the problem arose suddenly and reinstalling Spybot did not help, so I suspect that there may be something in your file system that is causing Spybot to fail while attempting to access it.

You could try the following:
  • Delete all temporary files:
    • Click Start then select Run…
    • Type "%temp%" (no quotes).
    • When the Window Explorer window opens, delete everything listed.
    • Close the Window Explorer window after everything is deleted.

  • Run CHKDSK.
    1. Open a command prompt.
      • Click Start then select Run…
      • Type "command" or "cmd" (no quotes).
      • Click "OK"
    2. Type "chkdsk x: /f /r" (type command with no quotes and substituting the drive letter of your primary HDD for the "x:" [normally "c:"]). Note: Option /f : Fixes errors on the disk. Option /r : Locates bad sectors and recovers readable information.
    3. Type "Y" (no quotes), when asked if you want to do this during the next reboot.
    4. Type "EXIT" (no quotes)
    5. Reboot your system.

Note: CHKDSK may run for quite a while so just be patient.
