Hi, Hope you can help me.
Firstly please accept that I am non technical when it comes to this sort of thing so if I have missed the blinding obvious - please feel free to let me know!
2 weeks ago my 14 year old son downloaded a file via MSN. This appeared to come from his friends, but in reality they didn't deliberately send it (so he says!). As I don't use MSN I can't comment further. Anyway, this caused 2 things to happen.
1. Random ads started poping up in IE7.
2. Windows defender started notifying about Clickspring Purityscan.
Since then I have spent hours both researching this (I fully understand the symptom matches the action of PurityScan) and trying to remove the infection without success. On the surface it is just annoying, but my concern is that this could also be making available information that I type into my computer such as Credit Card details when buying on line. My wife is now getting exasperated as she can't get the groceries ordered - now you know the pressure I'm under!!!
I've done all the obvious (to me ) things like looking to uninstall programs etc. but there is something more devious at play here.
I have Norton Anti Virus installed which now detects nothing when run.
It did detect (repeatedly) winstall.exe and then A0018341.exe and A0018356.exe.
I have also now installed Windows LiveOne Care (Anti Virus and Defender).
LiveOne has no viruses showing now, but has some files that can't be scanned.
Defender gives the all clear but periodically detects ClickSpring PuritySCAN which I then remove, only for it to appear again later.
After then resorting to the internet, I decided that your site was trustworthy and downloaded Spybot (my fear was downloading something that would make matters worse!). This detected some issues which were removed with your program.
Great I thought - problem solved. Only next time I started the computer, same problem.
What seems to be the case (again, excuse the non technical view) is that there is a program installed in my machine that isn't being detected which then creates a file or trace that is detected. This can then be deleted, but the original infection is untouched and just starts up again.
Spybot now is just repeatedly detecting "Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter.FirewallDisabled".
I then went on the search for another solution and downloaded what appears to be another trustable Spyware program, Spyware Doctor. This produces a much longer list of items that includes PurityScan. Of course you don't know if that would work until you pay up front and I'm relutant to do that especially as I thought I had solved it once with Spybot.
I've read some of the threads in your forum but can't find anything that exactly matches my problem.
If you are interested to look at this problem, then please let me know what information you would like and I will post it.
Many thanks
