Code 193

Spybot stopped working so I deleted it and downloaded the latest version.

I can't install it - I receive the message

"Unable to execute file: c:\...SpybotSD.exe

CreateProcess failed; code 193.

%1 is not a valid Win32 appliation."

Any suggestions?

Thank you.

Grant.

Hello Grant. Welcome.

Can we assume that Spybot-Search&Destroy was not successfully installed? Can you try renaming the .exe installer and then install from there? Are you having any malware infection symptoms?

Hello Drragostea,

Thank you for the welcome.

Spybot didn’t install.

Earlier today I ran Uniblue Spy Eraser and it picked up Win32.Bogle.E, which was then removed (presumably).

I’ve just downloaded and installed PC Tools Anti Virus. However, when started, received message:

“PCTVAV.exe is not a valid Win32 application”

but Task Manager shows PCTAVSvc.exe as running.

Prior to the message in the original post above, Ccleaner wouldn't open, so I deleted it, downloaded the latest version and it runs fine.

A few months ago I had a major problem with malware/virus (forgot the name - something win) which necessitated reformatting the hard drive and re-installing the OS. Suspicions were aroused by all anti-virus/malware prog’s refusing to open and the cpu running at a constant 25% capacity.

I did as you suggested above but in vain.

Hi horseguards,

please try to install one of the following Anti-Virus tools (all freeware)

if you haven't already installed another one.

Which firewall do you use?

Please try to download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here. Install it, update it and run a full scan.

If all this doesn't help you, please read the thread "BEFORE you POST"(READ this Procedure BEFORE Requesting Assistance), follow the instructions and open your own thread in the Malware Removal Forum where a security expert can help you. ;)

Best regards,
-Matt-

Hello Matt,

I installed your suggestions (ex AVG) including Malwarebyte.

Frightening at what was revealed ie overlooked/undetected by my current prog’s – Cclear, SpyEraser, , RegCure and Spybot (before I lost it).

Malwarebyte detected items which caused a re-install mentioned in the post above:

srosa in the registry
wintems.exe in windows\system32
m in Documents and settings\Grant\Application Data\

However, Avira Antivir managed to detected others missed by Malwarebyte:

mset2.exe (the TR/ATRAPS.Gen Trojan)

Setup.exe (from a downloaded zip file containing recognition pattern WORM/P2P.Kapucen.Gen).

Following the all-clear, I rebooted and did a final scan with Antvir, Malwarebyte, Spybot, Cclear, and Threatfire. Seems everything is OK, now.

Thank you for your advice, Matt. You saved my skin, and strengthened Anglo-Austro relations.

Regards,

Grant.

Hope you got it cleared up Grant. I'm sure malware won't be bothering you when you got those tools that -Matt- suggested.

Users usually received that error about the application not being a Win32 because a malware component is disabling it from starting up. Either that error or the problem does not popup at all.

I hope they're able to open now with no problems (CCleaner and Spybot-Search&Destroy).

Hi horseguards,

I'm happy that I could help you a little bit. :)

You've forgotten to answer this little question:
Which firewall do you use? ;)

Moreover, please make sure, that your Adobe Reader and Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE)-version are up-to-date. Some Malware use security problems from older versions to attack your computer. If theese tools aren't up-to-date, please un-install the old versions and after that install the new ones which you can get from here:
Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE)
Adobe Reader (Please dis-able Java in Adobe Reader until you'll get an Update from Adobe)

At least, now you should have installed on your computer:
  • Firewall, like ZoneAlarm or Comodo Internet Security
  • Anti-virus, like Avira Anti-Vir
  • Anti-Spyware, like Spybot, SpywareBlaster and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Everything ok now?

And don't forget: Update, update, update... especially your security tools and your operating system ;)

Best regards,
-Matt-
