Do I have the Bla Trojan horse?

Greetings all,

When I start up my laptop, I regularly get a message from Norton firewall to say that an intrusion attempt has been blocked. Last night, I finally got curious enough to ask for more details and I am worried by the result:

Rule "Default Block Bla Trojan horse" blocked (FAMILYLAPTOP(192.168.1.3),1042).
Inbound UDP packet.
Local address,service is (localhost,1042).
Remote address,service is (FAMILYLAPTOP(192.168.1.3),1042).
Process name is "N/A".​

This seems to be telling me that the trojan is on the laptop itself (192.168.1.3)

The only possible symptom I've noticed is that Firefox has stopped downloading certain graphic files (e.g. the text notifier image needed to register with this site - I had to register on another PC). However that may well be due to some other cause (no idea what; would love to know).

Norton anti-virus and spybot don't show up anything. Hijackthis log is below. I would be very grateful for any diagnostic help.

Hi Kevin, I don't use Norton/Symantec and do not know the language they use but it looks to me they are telling you that they are blocking malware (which is what they should do) that originates here:

The HJT log is not showing any malware, I suggest you ask these questions here: http://www.symantec.com/enterprise/support/index.jsp
Most malware programs will either announce any attempt at an intrusion or block them silently according to how you have the program configured.

Your Firefox issue, can you supply the error you get when you try to download the file word for word.

I do see at least one dangerously out of date program. If you will post an uninstall list with the error from Firefox, I will take a look.

Post also an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

Thanks for responding. I have removed Norton and installed AVG and Zone Alarm instead.

Unfortunately, the problem with Firefox (replicated in IE) persists. It has now become clearer - some websites just will not load eg adobe.com, ebay.co.uk, filehippo.com - yet all of these can be accessed from the other PC on the same wireless network.

An example message:

Network Timeout
The operation timed out when attempting to contact www.adobe.com.

The requested site did not respond to a connection request and the browser has stopped waiting for a reply.

* Could the server be experiencing high demand or a temporary failure? Try again later.

* Are you unable to browse other sites? Check the computer's network connection.

* Is your computer or network protected by a firewall or proxy? Incorrect settings can interfere with Web browsing.

* Still having trouble? Consult your network administrator or Internet provider for assistance.​

Thanks for the feedback, I run Zone Alarm free myself...make sure you are allowing internet access to the sites you mention, you might try turning off the firewall just long enough to make sure it is not blocking the sites.

Search:
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool". It is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

This can be done as time permits, but it is important.
Uninstall list: I look for malware and security issues and will not know all of your programs, but you should.
Hackers are using out of date programs to infect folks more and more,
Not sure how Secunia PSI is missing that, are you running it routinely?
Make sure you have the newest version.

After we clean, in the next C:\rapport.txt, there may be a very large hosts file (items starting with 127.0.0.1) and I do not need to see it. Edit (remove) it from the C:\rapport.txt before you post it.

Clean:
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode (before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually)
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infected files.
You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Optional:
To restore Trusted and Restricted site zone, select 3 and hit Enter.
You will be prompted: Restore Trusted Zone ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to delete trusted zone.
Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

Post the C:\rapport.txt and a new HJT log. <<< before you port those reports, you have
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware onboard, no need to download again, but please follow these instructions.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.malwarebytes.org/

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Unfortunately, I have no idea what is causing your problem. I will look a bit longer, but I begin to think it something other than malware causing the problem.

If you have not discussed these issues with your Internet Service Provider
yet, you need to do so.

You can start looking through information from folks with similiar messages:

Let's check for a rootkit:
ftp://ftp.f-secure.com/anti-virus/tools/fsbl.exe <<< download to your Desktop
Double click the fsbl.exe and accept the agreement
Click NEXT...then Scan
BlackLight will Scan for hidden items
Scan took 23 minutes on my computer (clean)
If anything is found save the report and post it. Items found may be valid so do not remove anything.

Phil, thanks for your time with this. It may well be completely unrelated to the norton bla trojan alert that sparked this off. Norton gave the source as the laptop itself, which was my worry - however this may have been a norton quirk of some sort.

I don't think it's an ISP-related issue because the other PC on the same wireless network (same router) has no problems.

I'll check the results of the google search and if I find the cause I'll post here, for archive completeness.

I've a kind of solution - a workaround.

I can view any website via www.megaproxy.com

I tried doing a hard re-set of my router. No effect but it did give me the opportunity to upgrade the passwords.

The settings for getting online could have been changed by the malware (on the infected computer) and they could be completely different, that's why you should have the ISP tech people check.

Still sounds like a setting, likely with the browser.

I can post additional scans to look for anything we may have missed, but I do not think we will find it in malware.
 
I think I might have cracked this.

The desktop, which works, plugs directly into the wireless router.

I've just tried plugging in this laptop instead and all websites now load without a problem.

So it looks like the problem is to do with the wireless connection.

I'll uninstall and re-load the netgear software and see if that is a permanent fix.

No idea why that should suddenly have started misbehaving. Could have been malware or maybe that bla trojan alert was a red herring.

Either way, its now more secure than it's ever been.

Clean the System Restore files like this:

Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
