help! can't update AVG,visit any A.V related sites or windows update

hi,
im hoping someone can help me out, i have a couple problems not sure if they are related;
-cant auto update AVG..server errors
-cant visit any anti virus websites at all-to manually update AVG
-cant visit any microsoft windows update related sites
-windows is providing me with a login screen on bootup now even though i havent setup any..although no pass required to login
-pc seems generally a little slower

ive just recently installed a fresh copy of XP, but ive left one partition unformatted (as a backup of files)... bad idea i know

i have;
-ran AVG up until the lack of updates, it regularly pops up with 'siemens.dll' ?
-ran 'trojan remover' which found and i assume removed about a handful of malware, although it reported 'userinit.exe' as being corrupt and was unable to repair it
-ran the current spybot (1.6.2) scans with a scan after restart, although i have doubts if it has actually automatically updated to the latest detection update

Hi billy999

To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.

You will now be presented with a screen similar to the one below:

5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply.

gday shaba, bittorrent is gone, after uninstall + reboot windows auto shutdown spybot with some jargon in the error msg, it all seems fine now though

i thought bit torrent was 'safer' then the likes of limewire etc? does a safe bittorrent app exsist?!

There is no safe P2P application.

We will begin with ComboFix. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:

Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link
Remember to re-enable them afterwards.
Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

i downloaded and ran combofix from all the links provided and get the same error message when i try to install

According to that error message I don't have very good news for you.

You have file infector, virut, which is able to infect all your executable files.

While in theory it is possible to remove, it is not that in practice because virut is buggy and disinfection results in corrupted files (at least at some extent).

So only sensible solution is to backup and reformat & reinstall.

Please don't use any usb sticks/external drives for backupping and don't backup any .exe, .scr., php, .asp, .htm and .html.

If you need help with reformatting, let me know.

ive been reading up about virut and ive realised ill have to start from scratch..

just a couple questions;

will music/videos/pictures/documents etc be safe to backup to DVD then scanned +reloaded onto my clean machine? as long as i havent backed up and *.exe right?

ive read that even a complete format of all my partitions and a clean install of windows cannot 100% remove the virut, as it can stay in the ram after a reboot, is that true?

and finally...how can i prevent all of this happening again?! can spybot + avg pickup the virut virus?

Yes, they should be.

No, it doesn't stay in ram after reboot. It can however stay in recovery partition if such available. Same applies if you have other partitions in your hard drive.

im back up and running
fresh install of xp with sp2 + sp3 + im guessing windows update has done its job
i have avg 8.5 installed along with the latest spybot all updated
ie8 + firefox 3.5 immunized
no p2p programs installed

any tips for staying safe?

i let windows install some updates and then auto shutdown the pc last nite... and today on bootup its shown me a login screen even though i havent set one up...this is what happened last time!
i hope its all in order, i havent restored any backup files
