help getting rid of unknown virus's and malware

am i recently got an old laptop off a friend and it is full of virus's and malware only it very hard to get rid of and i keep thinking it still there even though it not showing up on scans....

please is there anyone who could help me?? or even show me what to do to prevent it in future?? help would be much appreciated as i'm very new to this
