I know I'm supposed to provide a HJT log, but after downloading it to my desktop and installing it to the C:\Program Files\Trend Micro folder, then clicking on the desktop icon it produced, the program won't run. I wanted to uninstall it and reinstall it, but I can't find HJT on the list in add/remove program. I keep clicking the desktop icon, but the program never runs. How can I fix this, so I can produce a log?

Information

No Antivirus

I can see no indication of any Antivirus software.

Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that you have anti-virus software running on your machine.
This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.
Free AV list ( Home users only)
Avira AntiVir
Avast

Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week.
If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Antivirus is a MUST

Things are working well, so far. ujrxfan.exe isn't running anymore. oh, and i don't have utorrent installed. there may be some stray icons somewhere, but the program itself is uninstalled.

oh, and i don't have utorrent installed. there may be some stray icons somewhere, but the program itself is uninstalled.
That's fine, it showed in your logs so I was just warning you that I would be removing it :bigthumb:

there are still a couple of things showing that need sorting, so let's press on ...

Download and Run ComboFix (by sUBs)
Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:

Bleeping Computer ComboFix Tutorial

  • You must download it to and run it from your Desktop
  • Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.
  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log to post in your next reply
  • Re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix..

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own.
This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

Kaspersky Online Scanner .
Your Antivirus and/or Antispyware may give a warning during the scan. This is perfectly normal
NOTE:- This scan is best done from IE (Internet Explorer)

NOTE:- Vista users should start IE by Start(Vista Orb) >> Internet Explorer >> Right-Click Run As Admin
Go Here http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html

Read the Requirements and limitations before you click Accept.
Once the database has downloaded, click My Computer in the left pane
Now go and put the kettle on !
When the scan has completed, click Save Report As...
Enter a name for the file in the Filename: text box and then click the down arrow to the right of Save as type: and select text file (*.txt)
Click Save - by default the file will be saved to your Desktop, but you can change this if you wish.

**Note**

To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs.
  • Turn off the real-time scanner of all antivirus or antispyware programs while performing the online scan.
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75%. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

hey katana, i haven't done the last two things you told me to do because I think it came back. ujrxfan.exe had stopped running in my processes and things were starting to go back to normal, but now it's showing up again. i think it might have latched on to one of my flash drives (or my iPod) and whenever i plug it back in, it reinstalls itself. Should i still run combofix, or should i revert to a previous step?

i think it might have latched on to one of my flash drives (or my iPod) and whenever i plug it back in, it reinstalls itself.

Very likely, keep your USB/flash drives connected until I give you the "All Clear"

Flash Disinfector by sUBs
Please download Flash_Disinfector.exe by sUBs and save it to your desktop:

  • Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it.
  • Follow any prompts that may appear.
  • Wait until the program has finished scanning, then please exit the program.
The tool may ask you to insert your flash drive, or other removable drives. Please do so and allow the tool to clean it up as well.
Please restart your computer.

Now run Combofix and then Kaspersky

katana, I have 4 flash drives and an iPod but only have 3 usb ports. i restored my iPod with iTunes and plugged in 3 of the 4 flash drives, then ran flashdisinfector then combofix. i still have the 3 flash drives plugged in, but what about the 4th one?

Information

I've got to tell you, this is a very old infection. If you had an Antivirus installed you would not be having this trouble.

The best thing to do with the spare Flash drive is don't use it until we have finished cleaning the rest, and then we can sort that one out on it's own. I'd hold off with the iPod as well if you can.
(If I forget about it, remind me !!! )
----------------------------------------------------------- -----------------------------------------------------------

Step 1

Custom CFScript
  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

    Code:
    http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?p=294489#post294489
    Comment:: Katana
    Suspect::[4]

    ADS::
  • Save this as CFScript.txt and place it on your desktop.

    CFScriptb.gif

  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • **Note**
When CF finishes running, the ComboFix log will open along with a message box--do not be alarmed. With the above script, ComboFix will capture files to submit for analysis.
    • Ensure you are connected to the internet and click OK on the message box.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

----------------------------------------------------------- -----------------------------------------------------------
Step 2

----------------------------------------------------------- -----------------------------------------------------------
Step 3

Logs/Information to Post in Reply
Please post the following logs/Information in your reply
  • Combofix Log
  • Kaspersky Log
  • How are things running now ?

----------------------------------------------------------- -----------------------------------------------------------

Additional Notes

Remove Programs

Older versions of some programs have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Now click Start---Control Panel. Double click Add or Remove Programs (XP) / Programs and Features (Vista) . If any of the following programs are listed there,
click on the program to highlight it, and click on remove.
  • Java(TM) 6 Update 7
Now close the Control Panel.

katana, i ran kaspersky 4 times (twice with firefox, twice with IE) and all four times it stopped at 80 percent. I left one on overnight and it was still at 80 percent in the morning. I ran it again, went to school, and it was stuck on 80 when i got back. i just ran it again right now, and it stopped at 80 again. i must say, however, that the first time i ran it, it picked up on 6 infected files. then i ran combofix with the notepad script, and the three times i've run kaspersky since the 80 percent it's scanned has been clean.

OK, let's try something different

Custom CFScript
  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

    Code:
    FixCSet::
    File::
    c:\Program Files\.inf
    c:\Program Files\cctadab.inf
  • Save this as CFScript.txt and place it on your desktop.

    CFScriptb.gif

  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it will produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

Active Scan
Your Antivirus and/or Antispyware may give a warning during the scan. This is perfectly normal
NOTE:- Vista users should start IE by Start(Vista Orb) >> Internet Explorer >> Right-Click Run As Admin
Please go to this site Link >> ActiveScan << LINK
  • Click the Scan Now button
  • Follow the prompts to install the Active X if necessary
  • Go and make a cup of tea/coffee/beverage of your choice and watch some TV :)
  • When the scan is finished, a report will be generated
  • Next to Scan Details click the small export to notepad button and save the report to your desktop.
  • Please post the report in your reply.
