I have just downloaded spybot and am having difficulty..

I pressed 'search and destroy' and 'check for problems' and then got a grey box:

'You need to install the detection updates first by using the integrated update or the manual updater.'

Pressed 'search for updates', downloaded updates and got 'bad checksum' for 'english descriptions' and it stopped downloading part way through 'detection rules'.

Wondering what I am doing wrong?

"Bad Checksum" problems are usually caused by overloaded download servers.

To change download servers and for a workaround for "Bad Checksum" errors please see:

Note: The download server can be changed after the "Search for Updates" and before clicking "Download Updates". So if you find a server that works well, you can start by using that server in the future. Also note that if you want (not necessarily recommended) you can select a server and then right click on the button and "Set this server as the preferred download location". If you do that Spybot will select that sever rather than a random server for future updates.

After I have been hitting update. It never completes for me. Is there a workaround on that? DL directly the updates besides using the program?

There is a manual update for the detection files, however, if you could explain the symptoms of "It never completes for me.", perhaps we can figure out what is wrong with the integrated update facility.

If you are unable to get the updates using the integrated update facility, you can manually download and execute an update file/program (spybotsd_includes.exe) from safer-networking.org that will update the detection files. The file is located here:

    This updates the detection rules. Only needed if you do not want to use the update function integrated into Spybot-S&D.
This manual update file is updated around the same time that the updates are made available via the integrated update facility. The description changes on the download page but the download url remains constant.
