I was having problems with 1.5 so

I was having problems with my computer, it was running slow etc.
so I ran spybot it was version 1.5 something. I would run it and then
it would turn completely white with a perpetual hour glass in it.

I came here and saw that there was a newer version. I deleted the
version 1.5* using the control panel remove programs, and downloaded
1.62 which won't install. It says that spybot already exists so I clicked
install it anyway. Then I get a screen that says that spybot is read only.

I am windowguy because I sell windows like the ones in your home
and NOT because I know anything about computers.

What you can try:

Step # 1
Uninstall Spybot over the Add/Remove feature from Windows

Step # 2
Reboot your computer

Step # 3
Delete all leavings from Spybot, see here. There were still some files from Spybot on your computer and that was the reason why you got this message. ;)

Step # 4
Download Spybot 1.6.2 from here and install it.

Still problems? :)
 
Matt, steps 1 through 4 went great !

I updated spybot, then told it to do it's search, destroy
and plunder thing. It found 67 problems. I told it to delete
them and got the forever yours truly hour glass.

We need more information about the Malware on your computer. Therefore, it would be great if you can do the following two things:

Update Spybot (if you haven't already done), then run another scan. After the scan has finished, right click and choose Safe results to file.... Safe this textfile on your desktop and paste its content with your next answer.

Moreover, please download RootAlyzer and safe it on your desktop. Start this tool, click ok. After the quick scan has finished, click the Deep Scan tab and let it run. After this tool has finished, a logfile will be created. Please post its content as well with your next answer. :thanks:
 
I ran spybot again and when I right clicked and tried to save results to
file, I again got the perpetual hour glass.

Please try this:

Step # 1
Rename the *.exe file from Spybot into windowguy.exe and try to run Spybot again. Perhaps this may help you.

Step # 2
Run RootAlyzer like I have already told you.

Step # 3
If you can't get rid of this Malware, you should follow these instructions in the end.
 
I renamed Spybot using your instructions and it froze when I ran it.
