Immunization makes very slow startup

When I apply immunization, upon startup of my PC it takes about five minutes for my LAN to get connected to the Internet, causing problems with other autostart programs like Windows Live Mesh, which times out.
If I clear all entries from the hosts file, my PC starts up as usual. Five minutes is just not doable for me.

There was an issue with MSIE 8 and large hosts file. If Windows is fully updated, this issue should have been resolved. See Spybot Immunize Plus IE 8 Final Equals Disaster On WinXP SP3 and Immunizing Global Hosts File.

Just a blind shot in the dark, as you don't mention your OS version.

I have Windows 7 Home Premium and it is fully up to date. There is IE9 on my PC that some of my family prefer to use.
