inetcpl/shell32 error IE unstable

Hi,
Over the past week I have been trying to fix a problem. Symptoms include
IE can't connect, is unstable, works for a little while. Netscape performs
well. If I run 'control inetcpl.cpl' and click the connections tab, the following
error appears :
An exception occurred while trying to run "shell32.dll,Control_RunDLLinetcpl,Internet Options"
I have run ccleaner, malwarebytes, superantispyware, and spybot to no avail.
I have reinstalled IE7, and installed service pack 3. I have run 'sfc /scannow',
'regsvr32 /i /n inetcpl.dll', and 'regsvr32 /i shell32.dll, to no avail. Any help will
be appreciated.

Hi Rick, I just don't know about this one, I can't see malware in the HJT log. I do see this service running:
O23 - Service: Viewpoint Manager Service - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe
For your information, Viewpoint is installed by aol probably without your knowledge. I suggest you uninstall this resource waster in Add Remove programs.

May be left from an uninstall of Viewpoint, check Add Remove programs for an uninstaller. If not there, at least disable the service.

Since Phone is usually not free, I usually opt for email. It may take a little time to get the initial response, but the techs are knowledgeable about the subjuct and will not quit until your issues is resolved.

Thanks for the reply. Spybot shows no errors so whatever caused the problem,
it may be gone now. IE won't run at all, and a restore didn't fix the problem.
Seems like parts of my system are damaged. I'll pursue the MS forum you
suggested.
