Installed latest Spybot, but will not run

I have installed the lastest version of Spybot, but when I try to run it nothing happens. No doubt it is the malware stopping it from running. My dad once put the program on a boot disk and booted the computer from a floppy and ran the program and it killed it. I am not sure how to do that, and I can't asked my father since he has passed away. Can someone help?
