Making sure backup DVDs are not infected?

Recently I struggled with an infection that caused me to reformat my computer. Before this, I saved important files of mine onto DVD-Rs as backup.

I want to know if it's possible to make sure that these DVDs don't have any problems that could quickly transfer to my computer after I make a clean install of windows and install software to protect my computer.

You can try to install Sun xVM VirtualBox which is used for testing programs in safe interface.
When you install it, create a virtual machine, install OS in it, install and update anti-virus in it, mount host drive (CD/DVD Drive) and then scan DVD Disc for viruses in mounted host drive.

I know it's complicated, but there should be some tutorials for using it.
