New to Spybot

hey like the title says, new to spybot. and i got 2 questions...

1. since its freeware, i heard it has some imitators that actually install spyware on your comp, i wanna make sure i didnt install an imitator, so this is the link that i got it from: http://projects.securitywonks.net/projects/download.php?file=2

just wanna know if its alright to use it...

2. Does spybot protect against spyware? or just scans it...

The site seems safe enough. It received a Green rating from McAfee SiteAdvisor. As long you are not getting any out-of-the-ordinary balloons or any pop-up telling you to purchase 'hi-tech' software you are fine.
But here's a general idea:

Spybot-Search&Destroy not only defends you against spyware/malware, it scans for it too.
