Outlook express opening itself and doing strange things

Hi all!

Well last night I wake my computer from standby and all heck broke loose. It opens outlook express by itself (I don't use the program at all) and started typing things in without any prompting from me. It continued to do this opening random windows and such, I removed the cord so it couldn't go online.

After a few minutes of this (and attempting to use task manager to close the problem) I had to force the computer to restart. When I did that whatever was messing with outlook also was messing with my bios!

I got around to throwing some funny looking folders away, and as of now it's sitting there not doing anything but I'm still concerned. Interestingly I didn't download anything recently I think it got in through a web browser... As I typed the above it opened outlook but it isn't doing so at the pace it was last night.

Nothing much showing in the HJT log, unless I am missing something, there is no antivirus programrunning on this computer? Do you need a free one? Here is just a bit of information about what is going on online now.

You need to have installed:
antivirus
firewall
antispyware

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

Firstly, thank you for responding. I have indeed read the ‘before you post’ information.

You are correct, there is no antivirus software running on this computer. My theory (proven false now it seems) is that because this was a game machine, and as such I would not use it for web browsing, it would not need an antivirus program. Turns out, I decided to go to a web site or two, and wham I get this virus-thingy. I was wrong, I admit it. A free antivirus program would be greatly appreciated, any suggestions?

Install only one, update the program and scan the system. I will post additional information from security experts later. When this is done, post a new unformatted HJT log and tell me how the computer is running. If you receive any error messages, post those word for word.

That's fine and I am not really seeing any malware in the HijackThis log. MBAM was also clean except for one .txt tile that was cleaned.

1) Post an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

2) Wondering why you are still running Internet Explorer 6 when 7 (which gives you better security) has been released for a long time and IE8 is already out in beta?

3) Please post the results of an AVG scan (unless it is clean)
Right click the icon for AVG in System Tray and choose Open AVG User Interface.

Click on Update now, allow AVG to download and install any new updates.

Click on Computer Scanner then choose "Scan whole computer", this takes a round one hour on the computer I am using now.

Near the bottom above the words "The scan is complete" choose "Export overview to file"

Choose Desktop and give it a name you will recognize like AVG Scan Results, then choose SAVE.

Close results and close the Interface.

Copy and paste the contents of that file if I request it or you have something you think I should see.


4) Please provide more detailed information about any malware issues. Include any error messages you receive word for word.

5) I stopped using OE years ago, preferring the simplicity of hotmail. I can't relate to "doing strange things". Could you take the time to describe what it does exactly, when it started, does this happen all of the time. You can also see if any of this information helps.

2) I'm still running IE6 for a couple of reasons.
A- I don't use it, I use firefo 3.03 for everything other than automatic updates.
B- I don't like the control scheme for IE 7 therefor I want nothing to do with it.

3) No viruses or anything found, just warnings which I had it take care of.

4) No error messages at all. What happens is that the computer is just sitting there and outlook opens up (I'm not imputing anything at all). It will then attempt to set up a user account and start typing random gibberish in. It continues to do this until the system locks up and I have to force it to restart.

Earlier it started doing that again, and the left click on my mouse wouldn't work, but right click was behaving like left click. It was very odd.

5) I don't use outlook either, and I haven't done so for at least a decade. I leave it on the computer because it doesn't normally bother anything (until now it seems).

With all the above in mind, the computer is currently behaving itself. I will leave it running for a while longer to see if it starts to act up like it has been. Perhaps the various virus scans and such got the culprit.

All I will say on the browser issue is if you use it or not, it is still a security issue.

Uninstall list: I look for malware and security issues and will not know all of your programs, but you should.

Hackers are using out of date programs to infect folks more and more,
Here is a small free tool that lets you know when something needs an update if you are interested:

Viewpoint Media Player <<< if you don't use this, I would uninstall it.
For your information, Viewpoint is installed by aol probably without your knowledge. I suggest you uninstall this resource waster in Add Remove programs.

I'm assuming that because I've had the computer up for a few hours (and nothing has happened) that whatever caused it is now gone.
