Problem with malware redirecting Google searches

Hi,
I have a problem with a pesky piece of malware (adware?) that's hijacking the Google searches on my personal laptop. I would really appreciate it if you could help me out because it's annoying like hell. I run Windows XP home edition on my laptop and when I search for something on Google, the first few hits are invariably links to marketing websites. This happens irrespective of whether I use internet explorer or Mozilla. I have performed the following steps after going through the instructions on your webiste

1) Run the eTrust Antivirus Web Scanner for a full . It said no viruses found and didn't even ask to create a log file. I am assuming that was because it found nothing.

2) Updated Spybot v. 1.4 and switched system restore off before rebooting in safe mode.

3) Run Spybot v 1.4 and fixed every problem in red till it showed no more problems.

4) Rebooted back into Windows (with system restore still turned off) and ran HiJackThis. Here is the log file

Hi smukerjee

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log in a reply to this thread.

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. Your help is much appreciated. I did what you said. Vundofix found two files and asked to reboot my computer after removing them. When I rebooted my computer, Vundofix did not start on its own, so I did another Vundofix scan manually. This time it didn't find anything and on neither occasion did it generate a log. I ran Hijackthis after the second Vundofix scan and am attaching the log file below. Incidentally, I checked to see if I still have the Google redirect problem after running Vundofix and I still do. Anyway, Here's the Hijackthis log file.

Hi

* Copy&Paste the 2 entries below into the top 2 boxes

* Click Add Files and Click Close Window
* Click the Remove Vundo button.
* You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
* Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
* When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
* Turn your computer back on.
* Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.

I am sorry but the version of Vundofix that I downloaded from the link you sent in your pervious post does not have these features (at least for the first three steps). When I double click on Vundofix, I see a window with only two options "San for Vundo" and "Remove Vundo". There doesn't appear to be any option to put a check next to "Run Vundofix as a task". The other thing is that the file vundofix.txt is being created in my C:\ folder despite Vundofix being on my desktop. Vundofix doesn't even tell me that it's created a .txt file. I had to go looking for it and found it on my C:\ drive. Do I have the wrong version of Vundofix? The version I have says V6.4.1.

Despite the problem with Vundofix that I mentioned in my last post, I went ahead and did a Vundofix scan anyway and added and removed the two files as you suggested. Here is the file C:\vundofix.txt followed by the HijackThis log.

Hi

Sorry, my bad

Download the Killbox.
Unzip it to the desktop

Double-click Killbox.exe to run it.

Select "Delete on Reboot".
Place the following line (complete path) in bold in the "Full Path of File to Delete" box in Killbox:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\perfc000.dat
Put a mark next to "Delete on Reboot"
Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.
If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

Open HijackThis, click do a system scan only and checkmark these:

Looking better

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner. You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
Now click on Scan Settings
In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:

o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:

+ Extended (If available otherwise Standard)

o Scan Options:

+ Scan Archives
+ Scan Mail Bases
Click OK
Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
Now click on the Save as Text button
Save the file to your desktop.
Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Hi,
Google is working fine now. It has been since I removed the stuff you asked me to with Hijackthis. Thanks a bunch about that. Done. Everything looks fine. I'll post again (in a new thread) if there are any other problems. Thank you very much for your help. As a token of my appreciation, I would like to make a (modest, I don't have much money) donation to your site. You guys are rendering a great service.

Another thing, what should I install on my computer to prevent malware from getting in? I have Spybot and Ad-aware but I suppose those are beter for cleaning rather prevention. Also is Symantec anti-virus adequate to protect against most viruses?

Finally, I have downloaded a bunch of stuff (Vundofx, Killbox, Hijackthis, the Kasperksy files) during my correspondence with you. Should I delete any of them now?
