Red Bubble in taskbar and IE keeps crashing!

Hi,
First off I want to put out there that this is my first post here, so if I'm doing anything wrong please let me know. I read the rules too!

I was dumb, and opened a file before I scaned it for viruses or malware. I got something, not sure what. I'm using McAfee enterprise 8 with spyware module. I regularly scan with Ad-Aware too.

What I have done.
I've ran McAfee and Ad-Aware in both regulare and safe modes. I've gone to pcpitstop.com and used their scans.

So here is the problem. I get the red bubble in the taskbar telling me I have a security warning, and Internet Explorer is not working. For awhile the process "explorer.exe" was eating up a ton of CPU resources when I was doing nothing. That has stopped now but IE keeps crashing now. This doesn't hurt me too much because I use Firefox for most of my browsing. Another thing is that everytime I start up I get the error "pspmngqe.dll is missing" I couldn't find this file on any .dll download site. I got hijackthis and ran a scan. Here it is.

I know, I haven't updated to SP2 yet...I will first thing when I clear up these problems.

Welcome to the forum, since you are new, at the top of most forums is Pinned information to help you. In this case since you did not post a antivirus scan, I have to assume you missed this information.

If you feel comfortable following those directions. If not, read and follow the "Before you post" instructions and post the required information using Post Reply to stay in this topic.

Before you post, return to C:\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe <<< rename HJT.exe, call it hardware_man.exe or whatever you like. After a reboot we should be able to see the infection.

update

Ok I did a scan with Trend Micro's online scan, but I couldn't save a log of it. All I know is that after the scan it couldn't delete a "generic trojin"

Thanks for posting your information, please understand these hackers can call there junk anything they wish. Vundofix may not know the files at first, but it will learn. You want to run the fix until you see all Vundo files say: "Has been deleted"

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log in a reply to this thread.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

If there is a file VundoFix doesn't find we need it submitted. Please submit
the files to upload malware http://www.uploadmalware.com

I suggest you keep this computer offline as much as possible, this junk will attract more. Post the C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log using "Post Reply", stay in this same topic.

Where did you get all of this junk?

1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune

Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) How to use the Delete on Reboot tool

Start Hijackthis
Click on the Config button
Click on the Misc Tools button
Click on the button labeled Delete a file on reboot...
A new window will open asking you to select the file that you would like to delete on reboot. Navigate to the file: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winqao32.dll and click on it once, and then click on the Open button.
You will now be asked if you would like to reboot your computer to delete the file. Click on the Yes button if you would like to reboot now.

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

5) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\pspmngqe.dll <<< delete that file

C:\WINDOWS\System32\jbxbkni.dll <<< delete that file

6) Follow the instructions in this link to download, install, update and run AVG Anti-Spyware. Be sure to delete or at least quarantine anything it finds and scan the scan report to post.

7) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer and post the scan report from AVG Anti-Spyware, any information I requested, a new HJT log and any comments you think will help.

Have hidden files shown.

I deleted C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winqao32.dll on startup.

Used HiJackthis to fix all those other files.

I deleted these files:
C:\Documents and Settings\Craig\Local Settings\Application Data\rtuwzk.dll <<< delete that file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\pspmngqe.dll <<< delete that file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\jbxbkni.dll <<< delete that file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\drvxax.dll <<< delete that file
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winqao32.dll <<< delete that file

NOTE: I did not find ./pspmngqe.dll
or ./winqao32.dll

So therefore I didn't delete them.

Thanks for the information and the feedback, the HJT log is clean. If you should keep AVG Anti-Spyware past the trial, you will need to clean the quarantine.

Clean the quarantine folder
You can remove the files from the AVG AS Quarantine:
-Launch AVG AS and click the Infections button.
-Click the Quarantine tab
-Choose: Select All
-Click: Remove finally
-A window pops asking "Are you sure you want to remove the selected files...??"
-Select: Yes

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

AVG Anti-Spyware is a good program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.
