Red circle with X in notification area

While diagnosing some problems with Money 2006 and Norton 2006 conflicts, I had to uninstall Norton. While unprotected, my computer was infected by what I guess is adware. Here are the symptoms:

Red circle with X in notification area; a notification bubble periodically pops up indicating "Windows has detected spyware on your computer. Click here to fix .... yada, yada, yada. This links to a website for spyware removal tools"

I ran SpyBot S&D, restarted and let it run it again on startup. It found and fixed several problems.

I reinstalled Norton Internet Security and did a full scan. It found some things, but didn't eliminate this one.

Any ideas what this could be and how to get rid of it?
