Resident doesn't load on startup

I have windows XP sp3. Avast free antivirus. Resident never loads during startup; however, tea timer is running in the processes. The only way I can get the resident to show in the task bar is to check/uncheck resident protection (then it shows up)

I even uninstalled S&D and reinstalled thinking that would solve the problem, but still, it never loads during start up.

Everything is up to date.

Do you have a NVida graphic card?
If yes please open Spybot in the advanced mode via the menu item mode, go to 'tools'->'System Startup'.
Now deactivate the nwiz.exe.
Does this solve the problem?

Thanks! Actually I don't have access to that particular computer until tomorrow. I will check to see if that is the graphics card it uses. I do know it's an Acer Aspire one that is about 2 yrs old. Will report back if that works. Thanks
