Smifruad-C-Toolbar888 Problems: Please Help!!

Hi,

During one of my routine web browsing seesions, my Norton Antivirus caught few trojans/viruses including Adware.UCMore, Adware.NDotNet and a couple of similar ones. After fixing them with Norton, it asked me to reboot (recommended) and being the novice I am, I rebooted. It took usual than normal time to boot and I realized I got infected. I started seeing a lot popups. Just by browsing through my add/remove programs list I spotted few programs like webbuying (another one that I forgot other names) and uninstalled them from the add/remove programs. My reboot still took long time and when I tried to open a Firfox web browser the error message "The webpage you requested is not available offline. To view the page, click connect." started appearing consistently. If I say connect, some advertizing website is loaded in IE (I have both firfox and IE on my system). If I select stay offline I can see the addresses like the following it is trying to connect:

I am not sure if the above information is of any use but just wanted to give the complete background.

With little research on Google I ended up here at Spybot forums. I went through the FAQ's and tried Spybot-S&D. When I ran a scan with spybot it came up with the "smitfraud-c toolbar888" error along with few others. When I try to fix it and reboot, it is back. By going through some other posts, I ran a HijackThis and here is a log. Since I am not a very techie guy, please guide me in getting back my system to normal. Thank you so much!

I want you to post a HijackThis log with version 1.99.1:

Use this link to get HijackThis.
Save it to your desktop and then double-click to run it.
It will install the program in c:\program files\HijackThis.
Browse to that location with windows explorer, rename HijackThis.exe to scanner.exe and double click on the scanner.exe program to run. Choose the 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'
That will allow you to save the log to the desktop (or some other place) and leave open a notepad file with the HijackThis log in it.

Now post your HijackThis log into this topic.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log in a reply to this thread.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

  • Once the scan is complete, Right Click inside the listbox (white box) and click add more files
  • Copy&Paste the 2 entries below into the top 2 boxes

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\nnnmnkk.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\kknmnnn.*

  • Click Add Files and Click Close Window
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log in a reply to this thread.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.[/list]

Hi

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner. You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:

    o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:

    + Extended (If available otherwise Standard)

    o Scan Options:

    + Scan Archives
    + Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Hi Shaba,

I just followed your instructions in running the online Kaspersky virus scan. It went for about an hour and found about 10 + infections. Before I hit the save as button that system turned it self off. Is there a way that I can retrieve that log or should I go ahead and do it one more time?

No Shaba, I haven't encountered any problems so far. If I am done I have a couple of questions for you.

1. Of all the programs I installed, including HijackThis, Vundo ans Kaspersky etc. what do I need to delete and clean up? What about the 9 virus that Kaspersky still reporting?

2. I am sure know by going through my logs that I have a complete Norton Antivirus installed on my system. But I am still relying only on the windows firewall. Is there any other firewall that you recommend? I don't want to spend a bunch of money if there is something available out there!

3. Thank you so much for all your help and really appreciate all the times you guys are putting in to help out victims like me. Great job!:bigthumb:

1) They are all in system restore, I'll give you a bit later instructions how to clean it.

2) I think that according to your log, you have Norton Internet Security which has a firewall already? If not, I can recommend you some good and free firewalls.
