Smitfraud-C.CoreService

Alright, where to begin. Right now I'm posting from a "clean" computer.

The computer with the problem was having all sorts of pop-up ads whenever surfing the internet, so I figure whoever was using it probably clicked something they shouldn't have. Anyway, I started out by installing Ad-Aware 2007 and removing about 7 different things. However, when I ran ad-aware again, three of them popped up again like I hadn't done anything. So I was informed to try out SpyBot. I downloaded and ran it and it found even more stuff. I went to remove them all and it informed me that two of them could not be removed and if I'd like to run on restart. After letting it run on restart, it was able to remove the rest of the Virtuemonde nasty, but was still unable to get rid of two files and a registry key from the Smitfraud-C.CoreService. This is what I'd be interested in knowing how to completely get rid of. I ran HiJackThis (the trendmicro version) and got a log file after spybot ran after it's first restart (which I'll post below). SpyBot asked me if I wanted to fix it on restart again, which I figured, why not, so it's running right now, as we speak. The below HJT log is the log I ran between spybot restarts, if that makes any sense. I'm guessing the second time around that it runs on restart, it probably still won't get it clean, but who knows. Anyway, here's the HJT log:

I also wanted to mention that whenever I run spybot S&D, it also pops up with a virtuemonde nasty that I thought it got rid of but it seems to just keep coming back. Don't know if that info helps or not. :)

Hi

I don't know what file you renamed but not the right one (maybe the one in desktop which is a shortcut)

Rename C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe <--- this
into C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\scanner.exe <--- this and post back a fresh HijackThis log, please :)

What's next? This is kinda fun fixing someone else's computer

Hi

Well next step is to install antivirus and firewall and some removals.

I see that there's McAfee disabled via msconfig, so has its subscription ended?

If so, I give you instructions how to remove it totally.

Yeah, the subscription has ended on McAfee since the computer came with it from Dell. Is there anything else on the computer that needs to be removed other than that, or is it "clean" now?

Also, what malware/virus protection programs would you recommend?

Hi

Then first do this

After that:

Looking over your log, it seems you don't have any evidence of an anti-virus software.

Anti-virus software are programs that detect, cleanse, and erase harmful virus files on a computer, Web server, or network. Unchecked, virus files can unintentionally be forwarded to others, including trading partners and thereby spreading infection. Because new viruses regularly emerge, anti-virus software should be updated frequently. Anti-virus software can scan the computer memory and disk drives for malicious code. They can alert the user if a virus is present, and will clean, delete (or quarantine) infected files or directories. Please download a free anti-virus software from one these excellent vendors NOW:

1) Antivir PersonalEdition Classic - Free anti-virus software for Windows. Detects and removes more than 50,000 viruses. Free support.
2) avast! 4 Home Edition - Anti-virus program for Windows. The home edition is freeware for noncommercial users.
3) AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition - Free edition of the AVG anti-virus program for Windows.

It is strongly recommended that you run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and can result in program conflicts and false virus alerts. If you choose to install more than one antivirus program on your computer, then only one of them should be active in memory at a time.

Looking over your log, it seems you don't have any evidence of a third party firewall.

As the term conveys, a firewall is an extra layer of security installed onto computers, which restricts access to systems from the outside world. Firewalls protect against hackers and malicious intruders. I want you to download a free firewall NOW from one of these excellent vendors:

1) ZoneAlarm
2) Agnitum
3) Sunbelt/Kerio
4) Comodo

If you are using the built-in Windows XP firewall, it is not recommended as it does not block outgoing connections. This means that any malware on your computer is free to "phone home" for more instructions. Simply put, Windows XP contains a mediocre firewall. This firewall is NO replacement for a dedicated software solution. Remember to use only one firewall at the same time.

After that, post back a fresh HijackThis log :)

Alright, I got rid of the last remnants of McAfee, and threw avast! and ZoneAlarm on my parents computer so they should be good to go now. Here's their (hopefully) last HJT log: :)

Hi

Some cleanup still :)

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Save this as "CFScript"

CFScript.gif

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThislog.

Alright, made the CFScript text file, dragged it onto the ComboFix executable file, let it run, and here's that log:

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner. You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:

o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:

+ Extended (If available otherwise Standard)

    o Scan Options:

    + Scan Archives
    + Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.
