spybot gets stuck when updating signatures

I installed spybot and wanted to to a system scan
When it starts Spybot tells me there are signatures missing, so I click on update and the program gets stuck; the window where there should be the progress is empty and nothing happens

You might want to check to see that the Spybot proxy is disabled,in case that might be what is stopping the update.There are instructions here.
