Trojan Conhook: is it really gone?

Hi there, this is my first time on one of these forums, so I apologize if I'm wasting anyone's time.

Spy Sweeper detected the conhook trojan, and usually, when Spy Sweeper finds something, it kills it for good. This thing, however, kept popping up. I read some of the other forums last night, and succeeded in eliminating a bad .dll file, but a bad registry key (HKLM\software\microsoft\rasap2k) keeps returning.

I ran two Spy Sweeper sweeps back to back, and nothing showed up the second time, but I can't help but think this thing is going to reappear the next time I shut down and reboot. Here is what my HJT log looks like at the moment.

What, if anything, do I need to do in order to get rid of this thing for good? And I also noticed that Spybot does not appear on my desktop when I'm in Safe mode. Spy Sweeper and Ad-Aware do, but Spybot, for whatever reason, doesn't. Any ideas why that is?

Welcome aboard.. Lets get it cleaned up for good.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
• Check the Run VundoFix as a task box.
• Click the Scan for Vundo button.
• Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
• You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
• Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
• When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
• Turn your computer back on.
• Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a fresh HiJackThis log.

When I click on "Run VondoFix as a task," a box comes up saying that the program will come back up in a minute. When it comes back up, I can no longer check "Run VondoFix as a task" (it's grayed out). Is this normal?

Now close ALL other open windows except for HijackThis and hit FIX CHECKED. Exit HijackThis.

Through Add/Remove programs, please uninstall the following entry if present:

MyWaySearchAssistant or anything similar.

Then navigate to and delete the following folder:

C:\Program Files\MyWaySA

Empty recycle bin.

Updating Java and Clearing Cache

• Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Software icon > Add/Remove Programs.
• Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )
  It should have next icon next to it:
  
  
  Select it and click Remove.
  1. Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Java Icon (coffee cup) in the Control Panel.
  2. It will say "Java Plug-in" under the icon.
     Please find the update button or tab in the Java Control Panel. Update your Java then reboot.
  3. If you are unable to update you can manually update by going here:
     • 
       http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
  4. After the reboot, go back into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon.
  5. Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Delete Files button.
  6. There are three options in the window to clear the cache - Leave ALL 3 Checked
     • 
       Downloaded Applets
       Downloaded Applications
       Other Files
  7. Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
     Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  8. Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

Huh. I fixed everything in Hijack This that you suggested, but MyWay Assistant absolutely would not uninstall. It kept saying some .dll file could not be found, and it aborted before it could even begin. But I went ahead and deleted the MyWay SA folder anyway, which may have been foolish because it looks as though half of those objects I removed are back again:

On the plus side, it looks as though conhook is gone for good, so yay! But my computer is still stalling for a few seconds at a time, which it had never done before I got this trojan. (I have also gotten rid of Trend Micro and installed NOD32, at the recommendation of an IT friend of mine, since our last communication). Also, AIM keeps popping up in my startup folder, even after I remove it. That never happened before I got the trojan, either.

Is there anything else I need to do? Thank you so, so much for all your help.

Uh oh. It found two traces of conhook (which sent NOD32 into a frenzy), and then stopped dead halfway through the 'disinfect & submit' stage. I need to leave for a few hours, so hopefully it will be fixed by the time I get back. But it's been about 10 minutes now, and it has shown no signs of finishing. Stay tuned...

Okay, now it gets really weird. I ran the sweep a second time, and it said it found nothing. NOD32, however, still found two traces of conhook, and quarantined them. Still, I'm not convinced that it's gone for good.

Wait... NOD32 found traces of conhook.. Alright.. Does it show the location?

If you can find the following folder, delete it (Vundofix backups):

C:\VundoFix Backups <-- if you find it, most probably NOD32 was finding the backups.

And now I even realized why the R1 entries aren't going...

Windows Defender's real-time protection is probably screwing the HJT fix up.

To disable Real-Time Protection:

• Go to "Tools" | "General Settings"
• Scroll down to "Real-time protection options"
• Uncheck "Turn on real-time protection (recommended)"
• Remember to reactivate this feature when we have finished all our work.

Then run a new scan with HijackThis and check the following objects for removal:

I did have a Vundofix Backups file, but it was empty. I deleted it anyway.

The traces that NOD32 found were in c:\system volume information\_restore\... and then a string of letters and numbers. There were two traces of it. I have since run NOD32 scans and there are no traces of Conhook to be found. I am going to restart my machine, run a HJT log, and see if that MyWay stuff is gone for good. I'm still a little concerned over the frequent pauses my laptop is making, but I don't see any CPU usage going on when it happens, so hopefully it's nothing.

I'm telling you, I'm doing everything you say. Windows Defender is still disabled for real-time protection, but that damn MyWay stuff will not go away. WTF?

It has been all the time.. Looks like NOD has been finding it from the system restore which is harmless and we'll clear it up once the system is clean.

Can I suggest something...

Uninstall Windows Defender completely. There are better tools out there and I'll let you know about the protection apps ONCE we get this done :blink:

Now make sure your SpySweeper is not interfering with the fixes. Restore the program, then disable ALL the shields.

We'll enable them once we get this done.... Then fix the same entries within HijackThis (remember to close ALL other open windows except for HijackThis when clicking FIX CHECKED) in SAFE MODE. Instructions here if necessary: http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml

Then reboot back into NORMAL MODE and post the fresh log.
