Unable to install spybot

I am running XP service pack 2 and I have downloaded the latest version of spybot. When I go to install it, I get the which language screen, I select English and that is as far as it will go. Setup just sits in the taskbar and when I go to Task Manager it shows it is loaded into memory but does not do anything. When I right click the setup from the task bar and click close I get the message Program not responding do you want to end now, I click end now and still nothing happens. Even when I do a shutdown it does nothing. I have to manually power off the computer (hold in the power button) to shut it down.

Any ideas how I can get spybot to install.

BTW: I also have AVG running and when I am in the internet I start getting popups for Adware mainly.

Thanks for your help.

Did you download the installation program (spybotsd14.exe) from one of the sites listed here?
Is the size and MD5 of the spybotsd14.exe installation program correct?
  • Size: 5037072
  • MD5: C1A843913269018A8FC962407D7E5169
Are you installing from a user account with authority to install software (example: computer administrator account in Windows XP)?
