Unexpected Error in Fixing Problem: Out of Memory

Hello,

Spybot is a fantastic piece of software, however I ran across a problem I have never seen before. This system was particularly infested with malware, and when I first ran the scan it indicated 211 problems. I clicked on "Fix Selected Problems" and it ran for roughly five minutes before the following error presented itself:

"Unexpected Error in Fixing Problem: Out of Memory"

I rebooted, Spybot started after the initial login and begin another scan. This time it picked up 158 problems, but hit the same error message.

Spybot was updated with new definitions, but was disconnected from the Internet after this.

Any suggestions how to circumvent or fix this error?
 
try in safe mode
run ccleaner or similar first
what does your AV say?
do not delete- relocate to quarantine
post back anything not fixed
 
Thanks for the reply, wyrmrider. I'll reboot and try in safe mode. CCleaner was run before hand.

I have McAfee VirusScan installed, again running on up-to-date definitions. Trouble was, the user of the system did not have an anti-virus before-hand, and McAfee picked up nearly 400 problems before finishing its initial scan.
 
This might be a problem because the PC was running without a anti-virus program. When was McAfee VirusScan installed? Is it a paid subscription or a trial?

What is your Operating System? Windows XP? If so, take a look at the System Properties under 'Performance and Maintenance'. This feature will tell you the model, version, and the amount of RAM (memory) the computer has.

Better safe than sorry. I would suggest you visit the Malware Forums to get you cleaned up. Was McAfee successful in cleaning the threats?

The system is running Windows XP Media Center 2005 running SP2 only because the horrid spyware made download/install new patches painfully slow. I do intend to install the newest updates once the cruft has been cleared away.

McAfee is a paid version, completely up-to-date, registered, and ready to go. It was installed before the installation of Spybot because the signs of infection weren't immediately obvious.

Specs are as follows:

AMD Athlon x64 3800+
1 Gig Memory
320 gig hard drive
Nvidia 6100 Integrated Video

McAfee did find and delete many of the trojans and known virii, but even after considerable time and a third complete scan it still detects loads of malware.

As I cannot provide Malware Solutions for you sugar, however I can advise you:

Consider posting in the Malware Removal forum and having someone take a look at your system.

If you decide to have an experienced malware removal specialist assist you, please follow the procedure in this link to run scans and produce a HijackThis log:--
Can you run a scan with Spybot-SD in 'Safe Mode'? This reduces the chance of the malware 'booting' up as Safe Mode is more strict with the running processes and require only the Micosoft processes to run.

In other words, this increases the chance of Spybot-SD's scanning potential.

As for the other properties, there should be no problems.

Use a Firewall, anti-virus, and a anti-spyware program. Safe surfing... after you get cleaned up : )
 
Ugh, the "Out of Memory" error just popped up again halfway through a fix of 144 problems after 56 minutes of scanning.

Currently, the system is running in safe mode.

Edit: I should note that when I attempt to "re-fix" the un-corrected problems, the following error presents itself:

"Failed to load: C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search and Detroy\DelZip179.dll"

I have to recheck for problems if I want the remaining malware to be extracted.

However, have you experienced or seen another system with similiar problems regarding the "out of memory" error?
 
Have you created a thread in the Malware Forums yet? I'm suspecting... that the malware may the culprit for the memory error...

If you have the time, boot into normal mode and check out the Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Delete) to see how many processes are running...

In the mean time... clear all the cache, temp. files, and cookies from your browsers.
