Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
Then post the resultant log.

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

Hello,

First of all, thanks so much for your help...I apreciate it!!

This has made me a nervous wreck.

I'm not sure I did everything correctly...

If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

None of this part happened that I know of. I save text and closed. Then I had a blank screen, so I manualy turned off computer and turned back on.

Everything else seemed to work fine.

Here are the logs:

Thanks again!!

You're welcome :)

Let's continue a bit.

First delete c:\qoobox folder.

Then start hjt, do a system scan, check (if found):
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {0BF43445-2F28-4351-9252-17FE6E806AA0} - (no file)

Well congrats, it appears your system is all clean Are you still noticing any problems? If not, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis

Next we remove all used tools.

Please download OTMoveIt2 and save it to desktop.
  • Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe.
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the
    Begin cleanup Process?
    prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTMoveIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

You're using vulnerable Microsoft Java. Since Microsoft doesn't provide security patches to it it's recommended to remove it and install Sun Java. Instructions here.

UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.

  • Comodo BOCLEAN <= Stop identity thieves from getting personal information. Instantly detects well over 1,000,000 unique, variant and repack malware in total. And it's free.
  • Download Adaware
Adaware is a free program. It scans for known spyware on your computer. These scans should be run at least once every two weeks. For more information, see this tutorial
The program is available for download here
  • Download SpywareBlaster
Spyware blaster is a program that stops known malicious activex controls from installing on your computer. It works by changing settings in your registry. It makes
    kill bits
in the registry, so that certain activex controls can't install.
If you don't know what activex controls are, see here
You can download SpywareBlaster here here
    SpywareBlaster tutorial
  • Download iespyad
It puts many bad webpages on your restricted zones list. This means that you can still view the
    bad
webpages, but the webpages cannot do certain things (such as use javascripts and cookies).
If you need help understanding how it works, there is a tutorial here
    Download it here
  • hosts file:
    • Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them.
    • In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages.
    • We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages.
    • However, it can slow down certain computers.
    • This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here. Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
    1. [*]Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) [*]Click run [*]In the dialog box, type services.msc [*]hit enter, then locate dns client [*]Highlight it, then double-click it. [*]On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. [*]Click ok

Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Run the spybot and adaware regularly. (Once or twice a week minimum.)
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.

Have a great day,
Blade

Hi Blade,

Again & again...THANKS allot for your help. This has been a rewarding experience so far.
And most importantly, our computer works much better. Maybe I can get some work done finally...

I do have a few (maybe more) Questions still:

1. When I re-start the computer, most of the time, a (prompt?) pops up for "digital line detected (PBX):..." to OK. What is this? Only recently this has been happening (for about 2 weeks). Seems un-related to what we have been doing but I'm not sure.

2. When I tried to remove the Microsoft Java and install the Sun Java this came up:

Advanced INF Install

Error: could not locate INF file 'file'.

3. When I tried to update Microsoft Office, I "did not pass validation" and asked me to uninstall office products. I did not do that since this is a Dell computer that came with XP and it should be legit.

4. I installed the BOClean (and I think another one said the same thing), but it said something about I had to be done under or by administrator. The only people who use this computer are me and my wife at home and the only time I see an administrator icon is when it is in safe mode. A friend help set this computer up and I wonder if I even know what the password is for "administrator". He might... Is there something I am doing wrong here?

5. I have a folder on the desk top that says "backups". Don't know where that came from. Do I need it?

6. Do I still need the all this stuff on my desktop like Kaspersky reports, Spyware Terminator, ATF-Cleaner.exe, HiJackThis (and logs), Combo fix logs, VirtumundoBeGone.exe + txt, Malwarebytes software + log? Should I save it or toss/uninstall this stuff?

Sorry about all the questions, some even sound stupid to me...but I want to make sure I get this all corrected. So I can relax and have a beer (or 5).

I installed all the recommended stuff except I am not quit done with the completion of the iespyad download and have not started w/ host files thing (seems a little complicated). I need to take a shower and buy some cigarettes before I tackle that.

Thank You!!!

Robert & Aya (she is in Japan right now and when she gets back, she will be very thankful too)

P.S. I am very into music and soccer too. And now computers.

Hi Robert :)

1. When I re-start the computer, most of the time, a (prompt?) pops up for "digital line detected (PBX):..." to OK. What is this? Only recently this has been happening (for about 2 weeks). Seems un-related to what we have been doing but I'm not sure.
I haven't seen the problem before but did some searching and found this topic. The user seemed to have exactly same kind of problem and owns Dell PC as well. Dell Corp Gold Support advised him to remove Digital Line detected related entry thru add/remove programs.

I believe it's this entry in hjt: O4 - Global Startup: Digital Line Detect.lnk = ?. You could try to fix it with hijackthis and then reboot and check if that notification still appears.

2. When I tried to remove the Microsoft Java and install the Sun Java this came up:

Advanced INF Install

Error: could not locate INF file 'file'.
Could you tell me in what phase of process exactly? Had you already followed all the steps behind that link I gave you?

3. When I tried to update Microsoft Office, I "did not pass validation" and asked me to uninstall office products. I did not do that since this is a Dell computer that came with XP and it should be legit.
For this I suggest you check this forum where you can report about issues relating to Office Genuine Advantage validation. Before posting there check this topic.

With administrator is meant a user account which has rights to do modifications in the system (install new programs etc). So, administrators are also other users who have these modifying rights. It doesn't have to be the one named as "administrator". Didn't BoClean let you do something or did it just give a notification? What was the error if you got any?

5. I have a folder on the desk top that says "backups". Don't know where that came from. Do I need it?
That's backups folder for HijackThis. You can delete it for now.

From those I would keep ATF Cleaner and Malwarebytes' Anti-malware and run those occasionally (once or twice a month). :)

Hello Blade,

I'm back in action...

I did the fix on the O4 - Global Startup: Digital Line Detect.lnk = ? and it is gone for now. I read somewhere too that it should be removed in programs (it is there). I will remove it if it comes back.

Could you tell me in what phase of process exactly? Had you already followed all the steps behind that link I gave you?

I entered the RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection java.inf,UnInstall in the Open box, and clicked OK then this came up.

Advanced INF Install

Error: could not locate INF file 'file'.

OK button.

For this I suggest you check this forum where you can report about issues relating to Office Genuine Advantage validation. Before posting there check this topic.
I will do this later, first I will have to verify w/ my wife that XP did come w/ the computer.

With administrator is meant a user account which has rights to do modifications in the system (install new programs etc). So, administrators are also other users who have these modifying rights. It doesn't have to be the one named as "administrator". Didn't BoClean let you do something or did it just give a notification? What was the error if you got any?

That is what I thought; I just wanted to make sure. I had no problems installing the BoClean. No error.

Backups folder deleted.

Another question:

Should I keep (paying for) McAfee? Is this the best product out there or is the freeware good enough?

I have all the new software downloads on my desktop...does the software still work on both sides of the computer even though they are password protected? Guest side too? I'm guessing it does. Want to make sure.

Ok, that is it...the computer is running really well now, I am very happy about it.

Thanks again!

Robert

Hi Robert

I entered the RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection java.inf,UnInstall in the Open box, and clicked OK then this came up.

Advanced INF Install

Error: could not locate INF file 'file'.

OK button.
Skip over that step :)

Should I keep (paying for) McAfee? Is this the best product out there or is the freeware good enough?
Freeware antivirus and firewall products are nowadays very competitive. You may want to test those when your McAfee license expires. In case you want to change earlier then see here to choose one antivirus product. Here are some free firewalls. Remember to have only one active antivirus and firewall installed. More than that will cause slowdowns and other unexpected things. Those I recommended earlier (BoClean and others) are not antivirus programs so you don't have to uninstall those.

I have all the new software downloads on my desktop...does the software still work on both sides of the computer even though they are password protected? Guest side too? I'm guessing it does. Want to make sure.
It should work just fine on both sides. :)

Another dumb question...haha.

Where do I remove these? I don't understand what I am suppose to do.

Remove the following items:
The \%Systemroot%\Java folder
The file java.PNF from the \%Systemroot%\inf folder
The files jview.exe and wjview.exe from the \%Systemroot%\system32 folder
The registry subkey HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Java VM
The registry subkey HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ InternetExplorer \ AdvancedOptions \ JAVA_VM

Thanks Blade!!

Hi

Let's see what those actually mean :)

The \%Systemroot%\Java folder
The file java.PNF from the \%Systemroot%\inf folder
The files jview.exe and wjview.exe from the \%Systemroot%\system32 folder
Remove following folder if found:
c:\Windows\Java

and following files if found:
c:\windows\inf\java.PNF
c:\windows\system32\jview.exe
c:\windows\system32\wjview.exe

The registry subkey HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Java VM
The registry subkey HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ InternetExplorer \ AdvancedOptions \ JAVA_VM

That requires modifying the registry. So, it's better to backup the registry first.

Download ERUNT
Save it to your desktop. Run and install this program.

In the box that opens ONLY choose
System registry.

Then click OK.

Click save and then go to File > Exit.
This is so the registry can be restored to this point if we need it. It may take a minute. Just let it go until it's done.

To remove those click start->run. Write regedit and press enter.

Then first navigate into HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft node and click right mouse button over Java VM subkey (if found). Click delete to remove correspondent subkey from registry.

Then navigate into HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\InternetExplorer\AdvancedOptions node. Then delete JAVA_VM subkey as you did with the one above.

Hi Blade,

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly.

Remove following folder if found:
c:\Windows\Java = not found

and following files if found:
c:\windows\inf\java.PNF = not found
c:\windows\system32\jview.exe
c:\windows\system32\wjview.exe

c:\windows\system32 = hidden

Should I still modify registry?

Thanks.

Robert

Yes, check the registry and delete those meantioned subkeys if found :)

You're welcome Robert :)

Let me know if there's still something that requires explanation.

Hi Blade,

I just installed Java with Sun.

No problems.

Do I still need to keep ERUNT & NTREGOPT on my desktop?

I guess that is it?

Again, Thanks so much!!

My wife just got back from Japan a little while ago Today and now she wants on the computer...so I will let you know what she thinks.
Hopefully she is as satisfied as me.

Cheers!!

Robert

Yes, this case is ready and you may now delete those two folders :)

Hi Blade,

I thought I would give it a couple of days and see how the computer is running.

Even though it is running better than before (and no signs of previous problems w/ the spy ware that I know of), It is still slow loading pages, especially on my wife’s side of the computer (she is complaining a lot) Also, For some reason she could not upload her pictures from her camera like normal, so I think she used different software and was able to do it.

Also, I have been having problems recently with my Microsoft outlook recently...seems to be unrelated, but just started happening last couple days. It shuts down completely w/ certain replies to emails. (end now)

I don't know if these problems are related to what we did, but something still does not seem right.

What do you think?

Thanks again for your help!!

Robert
