Things are Looking Better

Things are better (Much Better). I am on the internet but still can't print. I have been working on that this morning without much luck. I am following the instruction in the link you sent but I still haven't solved the problem yet. I may have to remove the driver and reinstall. I finally got the Clock like I want it (Thanks for the info). For some reason I can't download my eMail today but I haven't had a problem with that lately.

Still working on issues.

Printer is online

I finally got my printer back online. Had to go to Control Panel>Printers and Faxes and remove my Dell printer then go to Add Hardware and reinstalled it. Seems to be working well now.

I still can't get to my mail. Outlook express tries to connect but times out even when I tell it to wait. This is the message I get.

"A time-out occurred while communicating with the server. Account: 'mail.comcast.net', Server: 'mail.comcast.net', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC19"

Also, I noticed by desktop icon says "Outlook Express (2)". The (2) is new.

Outlook Express

I am not having any success repairing Outlook. I called Comcast and they say all my settings are correct and that the problem is with Outlook. I tried to troublshoot with the link you sent. I clicked on "Start", "Run" and typed in "outlook.exe/safe" and I got the message "cannot find file". I did a search to the file but it also said it could not find the file. I did the next step. Go to "Control Panel" then click "Mail" but there is no mail Icon in my control panel.

I am stuck!

Outlook is still not up

Hi peku006,

After many hours of trying and following the instructions of the link I got on Outlook for about 1 min. by creating a new identity then it reverted back to the same error message I have been getting.
It seem my computer is slowing down again.

Mail Problems

Hi peku006,

I downloaded Thunderbird and got my new mail but......"Something" is blocking me from getting back to the server. I tried to reply to a message and it failed every time.

Any other suggestions?

it seems you don't have any evidence of a third party firewall.

As the term conveys, a firewall is an extra layer of security installed onto computers, which restricts access to systems from the outside world. Firewalls protect against hackers and malicious intruders. I want you to download a free firewall NOW from one of these excellent vendors:

1) Comodo (Uncheck during installation "Install Comodo SafeSurf..", Make Comodo my default search provider" and "Make Comodo Search my homepage")
2) Online Armor
3) PC Tools
4) Sunbelt/Kerio
5) ZoneAlarm (uncheck ZoneAlarm Spy Blocker during installation if you choose this one)

If you are using the built-in Windows XP firewall, it is not recommended as it does not block outgoing connections. This means that any malware on your computer is free to "phone home" for more instructions. Simply put, Windows XP contains a mediocre firewall. This firewall is NO replacement for a dedicated software solution. Remember to use only one firewall at the same time.

Run Hijackthis
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad

Norton, Firewall, and Log

I ran the Norton removal program (Couldn't access Norton by your posted link but I got there anyway.

I downloaded pctool firewall and ran HijackThis and pasted the log below.

For some reason I have lost communication with my printer again, but I am continuing to work on that.

The scans are fine and it looks like your machine is clean :)

Time for some housekeeping

Next we remove all used tools.

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK
  • CF_Cleanup.png
  • When shown the disclaimer, Select "2"

Please download OTCleanIt and save it to desktop.
  • Double-click OTCleanIt.exe.
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTCleanIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

Clear system restore points

  • This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:
    • Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
    • Select Create a restore point, and Ok it.
    • Next, go to Start > Run and type in cleanmgr
    • Select the More options tab
    • Choose the option to clean up system restore and OK it.
    This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.

Install MVPS Hosts File from here
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.

Note:"Be sure to disable the service "DNS Client" FIRST to allow the use of large HOSTS files without slowdowns.
If this isn't done first, the next reboot may take a VERY LONG TIME.
This is how to do it. First be sure you are signed in as a user with administrative privileges:
Stop and Disable the DNS Client Service
Go to Start, Run and type Services.msc and click OK.
Under the Extended Tab, Scroll down and find this service.
DNS Client
Right-Click on the DNS Client Service. Choose Properties
Select the General tab. Click on the Stop button.
Click the Arrow-down tab on the right-hand side at the Start-up Type box.
From the drop-down menu, click on Manual
Click the Apply tab, then click OK
