Hotmail SPAM right from Microsoft.
A few days ago we logged in to my friend's account and she got a "confirm mobile number" (and secondary email...) pre-inbox screen and EVEN though the url was live.com, I tried with one of my accounts just to make sure it wasn't a scam to hers only.
My account also requested that, so I went ahead and added my mobile to mine.
The URL was real. I'm a webmaster and I KNOW when a URL is fake (plus browsers no longer allow old tricks to fake URL. Even less in MAC)
Suddenly, after 48hs I didn't "confirm" the secondary email message, my OWN EMAIL ACCOUNT started sending spam to my friends.
Their reaction was obviously "HA, HA, You've been hacked", and they were right.
I've been experienced spam in the past, even those that arrive to my account abusing Hotmail server's which come to your inbox WITHOUT a "To" address anywhere in the source code, which is obviously an inside job or data leak from MS, but I've NEVER got BOUNCED SPAM in my inbox like now. I had spam sent from another accounts of mine, but no matter how they faked the delivery, the idea of the spam is NOT to include your real return address, so you take longer on figure out your email has been abused.
I'm a very careful person about email.
I use one account for any online registration, so my personal email is not spammed, and it has been clean for years. Only my friends send email to that account. Almost no spam, but certainly NEVER my friends have received anything from that account not coming from me.
I don't add emoticons, apps, mobile services, ANYTHING.
My SPAM email account has not the same passwords than my personal, or online services/registrations. Comments in websites won't match my sites's login, so nobody gets my password from anywhere else.
I don't "share" anything nor "check for online friends" anywhere where they ask for my email credentials.
Conclusion:
Hotmail is taking down not-verified accounts, and either to ABUSE or SCARE YOU (probably to sell some anti-virus or extra service), they are MAKING SOME MONEY (penny spamming?) right before to lock it up. Actually, that's the excuse they use to lock it up: "Your account has been sending spam...".
The last thing one thinks when giving extra info for any account is that IT WOULD START SENDING SPAM. One expects it being safer from then on, not worrier.
So, Where in the terms and conditions said "if you don't use your account, we'll use it to spam right before to disconnect it"?
It's like that old joke about a dangerous lost tribe raping a man every day with "Choose: Doonga-Doonga or death" and when he finally gives-up and chooses death, the aboriginal chief says "Ok, but first, a little doonga-doonga"
Just skip that screen, as my friend was doing for weeks (I have it managed from Apple Mail, so I never browse the crap, nor get viruses, and in this case, never saw that extra info screen until I actually logged in through a web browser)… or confirm it right away if they are too pushy (US govt wants everyone tracked down)
