I've tried several things on my own before coming here (details on what I tried further down). I didn't know you guys preferred to not have someone try their own fixes first, but I didnt read the sticky before coming to this forum.

First of all, when I turn on the computer a message on my desktop displays "Active Desktop Recovery" along with instructions how to restore the regular desktop. When I click the Box to restore the active desktop - although I never chose "active Desktop" in the first place - simply nothing happens.
When I try any of the other options (Desktop -> Customize Desktop -> Web Tab) there is no "Web Tab" only "General".

Also, every now and then my Computer will shut down on it's own. A message pops up saying something about "NTVDM CPU" or sometimes "NT Authority\System and "DCOM Process Service Launcher" and then there is a timer and the Computer shuts down.

As if this isnt enough trouble already I also keep getting a pop up balloon in the Notification Tray that Spyware was found on my computer and to click here to download a Spymare Removal Tool, but when I click the balloon my browser (using Internet Explorer) displays that "This webpage cannot be found".

I downloaded and installed Spybot Search and Destroy, Super Antispyware, Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool and AVG Free and scanned my PC with all of them and I guess some if not most of my problems have been eliminated but not all, and I could use some help finishing the clean up.

Oh wait - not a new symptom but one I forgot mentioning:

I cannot run Automatic Updates: all the settings to turn "On" Automatic Updates in the Security Center are disabled, ie grayed out.
 
I just now discovered another symptom: Whenever I attempt to start Task Manager, I get an error message that it has been "disabled by your System Administrator".
 
1) Please DO NOT ENABLE Spybot S&D TeaTimer while we work together.

2) Follow the directions in this tutorial:

when you get to instruction number 12, I would like you to save that log (Save Logfile) to the Desktop and post it for me to view.
When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to the Desktop. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

3) Post also an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

Follow the directions carefully and in the numbered order.

1) Download ResetTeaTimer.bat to the Desktop

Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat
to remove all entries set by TeaTimer (and preventing TeaTimer to restore them upon reactivation).

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune

Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

(I suggest you remove the HP redirects, but you can leave them if you use them)

4) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

It's running great now! I can change my desktop wallpaper and Task Manager is running again. Thanks so much for your help! The only thing that is still not working tho, is I still cannot turn on Automatic Updates, everything is still grayed out.

Ok, I wanted to give a few days to see how everything is running and it seems fine so far. AVG AntiVirus has been detecting 2 Trojans upon boot-up for a while, but for the last 3-4 days there have been no more alerts. Thank You for your help - let me know if I need to do anything else!
 
Clean the System Restore files like this:

Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Update MBAM and scan to be sure we missed none of the junk, there is no need to post a clean scan result.
(MBAM is yours to keep if you wish, update it and run it once a month or so)

Update AVG 8 and scan the system, to be sure it is running right and scanning clean. If you have problems with the program, contact tech support for instructions.
