Windows XP Security Malware keeps coming back

Well, everything is running smooth, but I'm getting browser redirects in Firefox (haven't tried in IE).

So, how can we fix these redirects?

UPDATE:

I used Google in Internet Explorer, and I had no redirects. I searched around 15 links, and no redirects occurred.

Firefox redirects when I google something about once every three searches.

So that then indicates that firefox is infected.

You will need completely remove firefox and reinstall it.

Please see here (steps 1.-4.), reinstall firefox and let me know if it helped.

Ok, I will follow those directions to uninstall Firefox within the next few days.

I used the laptop for quite a while today, and after a few hours, my taskbar changed styles and never reverted. Here is what it looks like... (see attached screenshot).

Other than that, no fake security warnings. At least that part of the malware is gone. :)

And to clarify, the text style of "Jokerman" is set by me. The only problem is that the taskbar itself is supposed to be blue and smooth.

I completely uninstalled firefox and reinstalled it. However, I'm still having to end an svchost.exe process that eats up a lot of CPU. I even turned off automatic updates like you asked.

Should we run a DDS scan or something? I'm considering restoring the entire thing if we can't get this sorted out pretty soon. The windows installation is about 3 years old now.

I just tried to go to the microsoft website to manually check for updates, but it says the page can't be loaded, while using both firefox and internet explorer. That's a new problem...

Restoring is looking like the best route so far...

I'm probably just going to do a full system restore. It seems like it's just one problem after another. Do you have any tips for me before or after I restore?

I know that once I do complete the restoration, installing anti-virus/malware software and updating EVERYTHING is the very first thing I should do.

I then recommend to backup needed documents, pictures and so and then doing what you already mentioned.
