I'm at my wit's end. I'm accustomed to ridding other peoples machines of viruses and malware using Combofix, Malwarebytes, Norman, and/or S&D but this thing that has infected my machine has resisted and morphed to the point where I need help.

I first noticed something was up when I couldn't connect via wireless to my net router. I've subsequently run into problems where I can't launch programs “Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file” or where I'm unable to install programs “System Administrator has set policies to prevent this installation”.

Luckily, I have a dual boot machine, so I can get things done in Linux, but I need to have Windows running properly to support other folks.

I'm using Windows XP sp3 on a Thinkpad laptop.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Combofix and Hijack logs attached

Hello MaineJane,

Please read this forum's FAQ "BEFORE you POST"(READ this Procedure BEFORE Requesting Assistance) and start a new topic providing a link back to this one. :)

Before doing so could you give more details please regarding,

I'm accustomed to ridding other peoples machines of viruses and malware using Combofix,

FYI, from: Do NOT run 'FIXES' before helpers have analyzed the HJT log
NOTE: ComboFix is not a general purpose cleaning tool!
It should only be run under the supervision of someone who has been trained and continues their education in its use.
Best regards.

XP - New Topic "Windows cannot access the specified service..."

As requested, here's a new thread, referencing this one.

Tashi> Before doing so could you give more details please regarding:

I use Teamviewer for remote support for general applications, I also test/troubleshoot applications that people use in their businesses (law firms, accountants, insurance, real estate, small businesses, etc.)

Among other tools, I've run Combofix in the past...without scripts or qualifiers. It's probably righted an infected machine about 5 times, out of perhaps 18 machines I've run it on. I've yet to come across a machine that was so hosed that I couldn't scrape the virus/malware out of it...and I'm hoping that's going to continue to be the case with my own machine.

I had run Combofix on my machine prior to ever visiting the Forum and reading "Before you Post"...so the horse was already out of the barn. Sorry.
