Hi,

I have major problems. It all started after I bought a new mobile phone (for £30! Great value lol)...The phone came with the 'vodafone assistant'. I installed it and everything was working fine. But after a couple of hours suddenly the computer went all slow, for no reason.

I couldn't open windows task manager, or anything else. So I rebooted the pc.

Ahhhhhh!!!!!

Windows boots up, I can see loading bar, but then instead of the welcome screen, a black screen greets me. There is no ui - no mouse cursor - no nothing.

On reboot again...I get the 'sorry for the inconvenience' screen, giving me the option to boot into: safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command promt, use last good configuration and boot into windows normally.

-I tried using 'use last good configuration' - but I just got the black screen again.

-I tried using 'boot into windows normally' - but I just got the black screen again.

-I tried using 'safe mode with networking' - but it only half loaded (leading me to have to restart the computer).

-Safe mode with command promt works.

-Safe mode works.

I have tried using system restore to a previous date - but still got the black screen when loading up windows.

I have no access to the internet, so no kaspersky (I am using a friends computer). I will post logs by transfering the logs on a memory stick and then to here.

I am in the process of backing up all my data. One problem, the cd-writer drive is broken...
I am compressing all the data, then I am going to have to buy an external hard drive (it is the only way to transfer my data to a safe place - that I can think of!)...

Anyway, I do not suspect anything malicous. But I would like to get to the bottom of this - and prefebly come out of this with a working computer.

If you do need logs - I would be happy to post them. And also if you need any more infomation, just ask a question.

Any advice about this strange occurance?

honda :(

p.s.no more firefox... :FF:

anyway - luckily the computer is quite old and I was already thinking about getting a new one!

How much old is your computer?
Try buying 1 or 2 or 4 GB USB disk or Bluetooth adapter to transfer to mobile phone or laptop (which supports bluetooth option) or you can buy another CD-DVD writer.

Good points but may not be worth it if honda12 is thinking of buying a new PC, they come loaded nowadays for a decent price.

Not sure why installing the 'vodafone assistant' would cause this problem. Did you call vodafone, hondo12?

Hi TomK,

My pc is getting quite old - hence the reason why we need to change it.

I have decided not to buy an external hard drive, and will only back up my most important data. (compression using 7zip on maximum!) All the other data isn't really that important.

As for buying another CD DVD writer, heh, I might aswell get a new pc anyway.

And also hi Tashi!

Well I can't really explain why the 'vodafone assistant' could cause these kinds of problems aswell.

aanyway I will call vodafone tomorrow

Good idea, if you do go ahead and buy the new PC, you wouldn't want to load that program and get the same reaction.

Hi lm10021,

I did try uninstalling the program in safe mode, but I still got the black screen! :fear:

I can only get on the internet for 1 hour (between 4pm-5pm GMT) Tuesday-Friday :clown:

so I can't reply as fast as usual

Anyway, I should get the new computer in the next 2 weeks or so...

I definately won't install 'vodafone assistant' on that machine!

anyway, until then, no more firefox....:FF:

Hi, just registered and am a newbie!. I want to know whether the pc is actually 'genuine microsoft' or pirated - it could help me answer the question.
(I have a feeling it's pirated)

Sorry

That isn't pirated, sorry for causing suspicion, just remember seeing one which was pirated. Now there are some which are genuine, but validateing it would be good! I work in PC World.

hi everyone,

just to let you know,

I decided to get a new laptop with vista! (Ineed to change my signiture! :red:) Vodafone haven't replied yet. I don't really mind - it would save alot of hassle, not having to argue with them! :D:

anyway, well luckily my desktop pc was old and needed replacing!

now, all I have to do, is restore my data and install some programs! :police:
