XP SP2 install

Hello,

I'm not sure where to post this, so I figured here would be ok.

I read here not to install XP SP2 until after the machine was cleaned. Oops, I read that after installing SP2 on a friends machine. I thought I should get all the updates before running any scans.

The machine does have virus/ spyware on it.

So... now what do I do?

If I run AVG, Adaware, spybot, etc... am i to trust the results?

Do I now need to reformat/ re-install XP?

I'm confused/ unsure how to proceed.
