Hi, Average Joe. Welcome to Safer Networking Forums. Please see the thread linked below for complete instructions.

As you have already posted a first HJThis log, just proceed with the remaining steps and post the other logs as reply to this topic for a final check.

Thank you.

Firstly....thanks Corrie for taking an interest.

I followed a procedure mapped out in another thread and have done the following:

SmitRem - Runthis.bat - I have a log saved and will post below

Spybot - I can fix all but one of the probs, I have to restart to attempt removal but it just won't have it

Ad-aware - Detected probs and dealt with them all

Ewido - Run the scan and cleaned all but one, wasn't sure? it was a downloader??? I have the log for this saved aswell and will post that too

This is where I'm at right now and I'm quite pleased with how its gone so far.

No more spyaxe desktop icon or annoying warning bubble. I do however have an invalid shortcut on my desktop to "online security guide" it is also on my start menu. it is affliated with this address http://securitylist.net/

I think its some kind of disguise for spyware...very naughty indeed

I will also post up a revised HJT.

I would like to once again thank you for your help. Its nice to know there is a balance of goodness out in cyberspace

Hi, Average Joe. I'm glad things are improving.

You will definitely want to remove that "downloader" with Ewido. It is a trojan. As to the unwanted desktop shortcuts, if you cannot remove them in normal mode, reboot to safe mode again and right-click, selecting delete. Be sure to empty your recycle bin!

Please post the logs as replies, not as attachments as I don't click on file attachments. Thank you.

Thanks Corrine really appreciate this...

I thought it would be a bit neater to post attachments...I shall reply with the logs as requested.

Firstly can I delete this downloader without running the whole scan again becasue it took absolutley ages (its in red) and if so where can I find it, I don't have a folder called recycler...that i'm aware of anyway.

Hi, Average Joe. Looks like that did the trick!

Regarding Limewire,

Limewire (The most current version of Limewire is reported to include spyware. LimeWire 4.9.28 is clean. Older and newer version may not be.)

See Mike Healon's article, "Clean and Infected File Sharing Programs" at http://www.spywareinfo.com/articles/p2p/ .

I suggest that you nstall and update both SpywareBlaster & SpyGuard to prevent the installation of spyware and other potentially unwanted software:

SpywareBlaster -- http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
SpywareGuard -- http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html

If you use Internet Explorer, IE-Spyad will add thousands of sites into your IE restricted zone: https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm .

Another useful program is StartupMonitor, which will warn you when somethings tries to sneak in: http://www.mlin.net/StartupMonitor.shtml

Regards,

Corrine

Corrine your an

I really appreciate your help and the spy axe issue has been resolved thanks to you.

However Spybot is detecting "Smitfraud C"...it attempts to fix it and suggests rebooting becasue there are changes to registry values.

Upon rebooting spybot fails to fix the problem...I'm not sure if this is related to the spy axe thing or not but the fraud part doesn't sound good...

do you have any thoughts?

Thanks, Average Joe. I'm glad I could assist.

Smitfraud, SpyAxe, SpySheriff, and more are all "similar", with Smitfraud the original "name" applied to this group. As additional variants with different characteristics were released, additional names have been applied.

I am sorry to say that I am not a SpyBot expert. I'll see if we can locate someone else to assist with your question.

Hi

Download this file to your desktop
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf
Close all browsers, right-click and select: Install
It realy doesnt install, just clears all sites in the domains and Ranges keys.
Afterward's you will need to immunize again in SpyBot and re-protect again with SpywareBlaster or re-install iespyadds if its installed, then the file itself can be deleted (DelDomains.inf)

Let us know if the problem persists

Average Joe

I have followed your instructions and now spybot isn't detecting anything.

Thanks very much LonnyRJones, i'm very grateful for your help

"the software may malfunction, cause your computer to malfunction, operate erroneously and/or affect the operation of other software in adverse manner."

Is there potentially a major problem here, beacause if something goes wrong due to me running this scan I would like it to be worthwhile.

Sorry to sound a little cautious but everythings seems to running ok

Having thought that spy axe was dead and buried it has once again risen from the depths of my p.c but this time with avengence. It now appears to posess the power to disable my norton anti-virus.

Will I have to run all the standard scans again (smitrem and ewido).

Hi

Start with that Blacklite and fresh Hiajckthis log's, an alternative program is rootkillrevieler from system internals

Download unzip then scan with RootkitRevealer
http://www.sysinternals.com/utilities/rootkitrevealer.html
when its done go file > save, attach or post the log back here in your next reply
Not to worry, normal there are a few of item shown.
It's an intensive scan, I suggest you disconnect from the internet and leave the PC alone until its finished.
Since the log might be very large, Please edit out items in
C:\RECYCLER\NPROTECT if there.
c:\windows\temps
documents and settings\your name\---- temporary internet files.
And C:\System Volume Information, before posting

Having thought that spy axe was dead and buried it has once again risen from the depths of my p.c but this time with avengence. It now appears to posess the power to disable my norton anti-virus.

Is the only symtom norton problems ?
Try starting it's uninstall via addremove programs and see if it offers an option to repair, if not (while dissconnected) uninstall the program reboot then install again.

Well everything was fine until norton informed me that my virus scan needed updating even though I had run an update check and installed some stuff a few days before. So I downloaded the items it recommended and all of a sudden I'm getting warnings of a spy axe infection. I then run a scan with norton which found nothing, then I ran a microsoft anti spyware scan which found nothing and also ran a spybot scan which detected nothing. I then ran an ad-aware scan which found some spy axe objects so I deleted them. Next thing I know is that norton is disabling itself and the computer is running particularly slow.

Is it possible that spy axe could have attached itself to norton in some way asking for updates and downloading spyware?

Ther wasn't an option to repair norton and I am now coming to the conclusion that norton has become corrupt. Everytime I start certain programs a norton installer tries to start up and a message regarding the repairing of norton or unistalling the software appears.

I'm going to unistall norton and get myself a 2006 version and see if things sort themself out.

Thanks very much LonnyRJones your help is very much appreciated!!!
