 multiple issues, lost isp browser capabilities; can only back my way on to the internet AFTER I reset winsock and clear DNS on the internet connection. ; Norton and Window updates were disabled, I first thought it was a norton download issue but realized after basic troubleshooting.. its malware of some sort.. I managed to get latest Spybot loaded.. but can not update since the 11th..I believe that was the lastest window update as well then.. Internet experiences problems and shuts non responsive program. Then everything freezes... any and all dialog boxes... all other applications run very slow....
So......
I have managed to access the internet and download the most current Hijackthis (2.) and have created this log...
This is older 02 compaq pc with xp... would like to save if possible ....(I don't know if actual User would be Vista friendly)..... Any help/advice/guidance would be appreciated... Thx...

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

You are infected, I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.

Welcome back, archives don't go back to 2005?

You are hacked by Ukrainian criminals at the least. Before we start, since you seem to know your computer, let's see if we can do this:

1) C:\Program Files\Ewido Folder\security suite\ewidoctrl.exe
ewido has been obsolete for a while, uninstall it in Add Remove programs.

2) C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe
For your information, Viewpoint is installed by aol probably without your knowledge. I suggest you uninstall this resource waster in Add Remove programs.
http://www.greatis.com/appdata/u/v/viewmgr.exe.htm
http://www.spywareinfo.com/newsletter/archives/2005/nov4.php#viewpoint
http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546

3) Now to go after the hackers:
Thanks to LonnyBJones and anyone else who helped with this fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to yourDesktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
Once the desktop loads post the text that will open (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log.

Thanks...Phil

I can not say, information is coming in today that I am still reading:
New DNSChanger Trojan variant targets routers
http://news.cnet.com/8301-10784_3-9970972-7.html
http://www.trustedsource.org/blog/42/New-DNSChanger-Trojan-hacks-into-routers

My best advice would be to isolate the computers from any network and start new topics for each computer, post a HJT log describing the situation. The helper will be able to advise you if the computer is infected.

I know what numbers the Ukrainians normally use, but they have been using these:
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{206A5E2D-DE94-4B64-A521-C13648506740}: NameServer = 208.67.220.220,208.67.222.222
O17 - HKLM\System\CS2\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 208.67.220.220,208.67.222.222
O17 - HKLM\System\CS3\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 208.67.220.220,208.67.222.222
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 208.67.220.220,208.67.222.222

to throw people off, these are serious criminals who are after $$$. A bit of information:

Thanks for returning your information, read and follow the direction carefully and in the numbered order.

1) Right click a blank spot on the Desktop and creat a new file called HJT. Move HJT.exe and the log that is there into that file. Backups for safety will also store there. It will look like this:
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\HJT\HijackThis.exe
"Before you Post" instructions explains this.

2) C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe
For your information, Viewpoint is installed by aol probably without your knowledge. I suggest you uninstall this resource waster in Add Remove programs.
http://www.greatis.com/appdata/u/v/viewmgr.exe.htm
http://www.spywareinfo.com/newsletter/archives/2005/nov4.php#viewpoint
http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546

3) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust...search/ie.html
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust.../www.yahoo.com
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {53707962-6F74-2D53-2644-206D7942484F} - (no file)
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{206A5E2D-DE94-4B64-A521-C13648506740}: NameServer = 208.67.220.220,208.67.222.222
O17 - HKLM\System\CS2\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 208.67.220.220,208.67.222.222
O17 - HKLM\System\CS3\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 208.67.220.220,208.67.222.222
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 208.67.220.220,208.67.222.222

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

5) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

6) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

Let me know about any malware issues at this point.

Thanks...Phil

Hi... currently at work... just checking the boards..
I do not see Viewpoint in my Add/Remove in control panel that is the only reason I did not remove it.
Can you suggesst another way of removing..... I thought I might search for the file but in now unistalls are tricky and would sometime effect other apps and/or leave msc.. files all over..

Let me know an alternative removal..

Also... was I supposed to be doing any of these actions in safe mode??? :red:because I was not....

Norton was disable when all this started.. Antivirus 2008... I had to unistall everything.... suggestion on protection when on line troublshooting?
And would you want to see it in the HTJ log eventually to be sure all's well?

Please read and follow the instructions, if safe mode is required it will say so in the instructions, just as if I need a HJT log:

Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply
not sure why you can not see viewpoint, might have a slightly different name but Viewpoint would be part of it. Keep in mind, that is a suggested removal, it is not malware, just junk. If you can not find it, post an uninstall list so I can look:
Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.
(You may edit out Microsoft, Hotfixes, Security Update for Windows XP,
Update for Windows XP and Windows XP Hotfix to shorten the list)

OK, just to make sure we are clear, the Viewpoint removal is optional, what I want to see is the MBAM results and a new HJT log, and let me know of any malware issues.

Thanks

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback, let's look at the uninstall list first. I am looking for "Viewpoint" any malware and any security issues. It's a good chance for you to look for stuff no longer needed.

1) Java 2 Runtime Environment Standard Edition v1.3.1
Read this: http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
This is a very, very old version and I see nothing newer in the HJT log. It is suggested for security reasons that you run the newest version if you are going to run Java and remove old versions.

2) Looks like an old version and a new one, if this is the case, uninstall the old version:
Spybot - Search & Destroy <<< uninstall
Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.5.2.20 <<< leave

3) Viewpoint Media Player <<< part of viewpoint, we will cover remove next.

Viewpoint Removal

A) uninstall the Viewpoint Media Player

B) Disable the Service
Click Start > Run and type services.msc
Scroll down to Viewpoint Manager Service and right click on it.
Click Properties and under Service Status click Stop, then under Startup Type change it to Disabled.

C) Navigate to C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\ <<< that folder in red and delete it.

**you may have to end process in task manager:
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe

Restart

THen went to windows for update.. NO updates except SP3
That's normal, SP3 is in my system tray, I have been advised not to download it yet so I won't. You get to make that call.

Your HJT log is still clean of malware and the only thing you did was install Norton so guess what.

THE ONLY SITES I went to were Windows and Norton since my last post and did that almost immediately after my last post
I am not so sure it is the PC, you might want to remove Norton (the only thing you installed) and see what happens.

Here is Norton/Symantec technical support:
http://www.symantec.com/enterprise/support/index.jsp

I can provide links to free antivirus programs if you wish, I run AVG 8 free myself.

Thanks

Updates -- only lacking SP3 <<< most folks in the know suggest waiting on that update, see the Google:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Service+pack+3+problems&btnG=Google+Search
In your case, it's a catch22, you might benefit from the update...but then again it might make it worse? I was hoping we could have the system stable before considering SP#3

Still having problems accessing internet.. system/applications non responsive. Do you want me to post another HJT log to see where we stand
Have you discussed the internet access issues with your Internet Service Provider? All access isssues are not the fault of malware.

Yes, post a new HJT log and I will take another look. I need as much information as you can provide, expecially any error messages which I must have word for word.

You may have to do a repair install or even a reinstallation of your operating system, but let's look a bit first. One of the first things we need to do is check for corrupt or missing system files, follow these instructions to do that:
http://dwightblackburn.com/winxp/

Thanks

As far as I can see there is nothing in the HJT log that should be causing the issues you are having. I am kind of at a dead end without more information. What exactly happens when you try to access the internet?

system/applications non responsive
I can not think of this occuring without some kind of error message from Windows?

Provide any information you think might help, You might want to see if this computer can access the internet without the router also.

Thanks

First, we need to get a little organized, this is not something I do a lot (troubleshoot) and I need to get feedback from things I suggest so I will know what I have tired.
I asked you to run System File Checker, was this done and did it help?

Have a look here: http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt-2000-xp/638168-problems-internet-explorer.html
the first message posted is:
szAppName : iexplore.exe szAppVer : 7.0.6000.16512 szModName : hungapp
szModVer : 0.0.0.0 offset : 00000000
which is exactly the message you posted. Read the suggestions in this topic, it may be a broswer issue.

Let me know about System File Checker And what happens when you try the suggestions in that link.

My next question, do you have another browser besides Internet Explorer?

Thanks

If not, download Firefox 3 and give it a try.

Can you walk me through just creating a new internet connection????
Have the technician at your Internet Service Provider do this for you.

how about unistalling and reinstalling ie 7.. ???
How about trying another browser first? Then you would know it is IE7
I posted a link to the newest Firefox (which I just installed)
