View Full Version : "DCOM Server Process Launcher Service terminated unexpectly"

About a week ago I picked up a Trojan (I learned after some research that it apparently exploits something in Adobe Acrobat to download as a PDF file without the user's knowledge). It locked me out of Task Manager, System Restore, etc. I used Malwarebytes to remove as much as I could, but it had disabled my McAfee antivirus software. I uninstalled McAfee and tried to reinstall, but it couldn't complete the installation.

So, I gave up on McAfee (since it obviously wasn't protecting me very well anyway) and got AVG, which installed successfully from a CD. It found things McAfee never had, including several Trojans, and things seemed back to normal.

Tonight I ran an AVG scan again, which came up totally clear, with zero suspicious items found. Having run a clean scan, I connected to the internet. About a minute later, I got the message "DCOM Server Process Launcher Service terminated unexpectedly," a 60-second countdown, and the computer restarted. After restarting, it sat on the BIOS screen for about 20 minutes before I gave up and turned it off.

I turned it back on and it started up fine, but moments later, I got the same message. This time I knew to disable it by entering "shutdown -a" in the Run: window. I ran a HiJackThis scan, and here is the log:

I'm thinking that the error has something to do with being connected to the internet (the computer was on for almost two hours while I was running my earlier scan, with no shutdown message, before I connected). Beyond that, I'm lost. Nothing on the log above looks particularly suspicious to me.

Thanks for any help you can give ... :o)

After a little experimenting, it seems that the shutdown error message pops up after Firefox is launched. I'm using the latest version, 3.5.7. Once I run "shutdown -a," everything appears to work normally.

Hi,

Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/dds) or here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.scr) or here (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/dds).
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
DDS.txt
Attach.txt

Save both reports to your desktop. Post them back to your topic.

Download GMER (http://www.gmer.net) here by clicking download exe -button and then saving it your desktop:
Double-click .exe that you downloaded
Click rootkit-tab and then scan.
Don't check
Show All
box while scanning in progress!
When scanning is ready, click Copy.
This copies log to clipboard
Post log (if the log is long, archive it into a zip file and attach instead of posting) in your reply.

Thanks for your reply. I should maybe also mention that my Google search results seem to be hijacked. I thought it was just in Firefox, but then I hit a bad one while using IE, too.

On to the results! First, the DDS results -

==== End Of File ===========================

When I tried to run GMER, the computer completely froze (clock stopped running and everything). After I restarted, I got an error message from Windows:
Data Execution Prevention
To help protect your computer, Windows has closed this program.
Name: Generic Host Process for Win32 Services
Publisher: Microsoft Corporation

Every time I closed the message, a new one popped up, maybe 15 times in all. I'm assuming this is related to GMER. Do I need to disable something before running this? I've never used this one before.

Hi,

Ok, let's try to manage without GMER.

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully first.

Please continue as follows:

Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html)
Remember to re-enable them afterwards.

Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt
New dds log.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Thanks, and sorry for the delay. I haven't been at the infected computer in a few days, but I have the instructions printed out and ready to go for the next time I'm there.

Regarding Combofix, what is it, exactly? There seems to be a lot of warnings about using it, could it potentially mess my computer up worse than it is?

Also, I am wondering if this "DCOM Server Process..." error message is due to an antivirus program "fixing" a file that is maybe used when starting up Firefox that had been infected. Do you think this is possible, and if so, would it be beneficial to completely uninstall and reinstall Firefox?

2010-02-01, 15:56
Hi,

ComboFix should be quite safe to use under supervision of trained helper. I posted the warning mostly because other people read these topics too. Instructions given apply only to the correspondent case and shouldn't be used in solving issues on some other system.

That DCOM error is related to the infection so Firefox reinstallation won't help there.

Sorry again for the delay, I finally had the opportunity to sit down and run ComboFix. This might be apparent from the log below, but I wanted to mention that a couple things happened while it was running that were not listed in the instructions document.
1) Before it started running stages 1-50, a message said that it detected rootkit activity and needs to reboot (it did, then continued running)
2) After running stages 1-50, a message said it was deleting two files (these are listed under "other deletions" in the report)
3) Before preparing the report, it rebooted Windows again, then a message said it could not find two things, they were file paths, but it went away too quickly and I couldn't read them

Anyway, here is the log. And, maybe a good sign, I am using Firefox right now and I haven't gotten the DCOM Server Process error message!

Hi again,

Is Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Professional used for other duties than to convert documents to pdf files?

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Driver::
Dlelturvhta
Hkmfos8sviive

Save this as
CFScript

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Close all browser windows and refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe. Let ComboFix update itself and install recovery console.
Then post the resultant log.

Uninstall old Adobe Reader versions and get the latest one (9.3) here (http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=10&platform=Windows) or get Foxit Reader here (http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/reader_2/down_reader.htm). Make sure you don't install toolbar if choose Foxit Reader! You may also check free readers introduced here (http://pdfreaders.org/).

Uninstall your current Adobe shockwave player and get the fresh one here (http://get.adobe.com/shockwave/) if needed.

Check here (http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/) to see if your Flash is up-to-date (do it separately with each of your browsers). If not, uninstall vulnerable versions by following instructions here (http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html). Fresh version can be obtained here (http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/).

Hi Blade,

In response to your instructions...

Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Professional is used to generate and edit PDF documents. I will be upgrading to Adobe CS4 soon, which includes Acrobat Professional 9.0, but in the meantime I do need to keep this version.

Before I do the ComboFix step, will this run ComboFix again? (And if so, should I disable my antivirus program again?)

I uninstalled Adobe Reader 9.1 and upgraded to 9.3.

I uninstalled Adobe Shockwave Player and upgraded to version 11.5.

Flash Player appears to be the latest version (10,0,32,18 in Firefox; 10,0,42,34 in IE).

I couldn't update Java. From the Java web site, I didn't just download an .exe file, it had me install a download manager program. Then that program tried to download JRE 6 Update 18. However, it seemed to keep reconnecting and restarting the download, and eventually reached its maximum number of attempts. I don't know if this is Java-related or virus-related, what do you think?

I'll wait to do the final steps (ATF Cleaner and Kaspersky Scanner) until I hear back from you regarding ComboFix and Java.

Thanks :o)

I believe it's some temporary issue.
