My Virtuemonde - and who knows what else?

O.K. I finally got the HJT file to work on my pc through a usb memory stick.
I can run FF and IE, but when visiting the Trend Micro Site to download HJTInstall or the .exe file, I get window on my pc: 'do you want to save this file?' I click yes and nothing happens, so I got the file through a friend's mac.

I spent a week getting rid of zenosearch and virtuemonde.
Only today did virtuemonde not appear with S+D scan. (maybe its back now)

Symptoms: It take a long time to load Firefox (20 seconds or so) like there is something in the background.

A window appears when the system boots up saying "internet connection is not available for website you are trying to access. Would you like to try again or work offline?" This is from IE. I don't run IE.
This has not happened since my last S+D scan.

Now, two 'terminal' windows very briefly appear, showing some kind of code referring to Deewoo.lnk. (I disabled the deewoo process in the registry last week thinking it looked suspicious. Now its rearing it head.)

When I try to log in to a website that has a form on it... I can't use it:
EXAMPLES:

entering text into google's querry box on GOOGLE"S WEB PAGE and pressing ENTER will do nothing. .....'waiting for google' says the browser

When trying to log into yahoo ..... I type in www.yahoo.ca ..... waiting for yahoo

Get this: If I try to log into hotmail.com - username+password ...ENTER .......Nothing happens....'waiting for hotmail' BUT!! if I enter an incorrect address and password - I get an immediate response: the password you've entered is incorrect. HAH!

all cookies are allowed

So, Can someone pleeeeeze shine the light of wisdom on whats left of my

Hi

Please uninstall Spybot for now to make sure TeaTimer won't interfere fixing. You may reinstall it after system is clean :)

1. Download combofix from any of these links and save it to Desktop:

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you (C:\ComboFix.txt). Post that log & a fresh hjt log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

Thankyou for you're help, I am in great appreciation to have it!

As requested: Spybot disabled, combofix run, (but Firefox opened by itself during it, and asked if I wanted make it the default browser, as it already is) I closed all the firefox windows during the combofix.

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.

SOME NOTES:

AFTER RUNNING COMBOFIX, AUTOMATIC MS UPDATES WERE ENABLED. FILES WERE DOWNLOADED
AND THE PC REBOOTED ITSELF (SO IT SAID).

WHEN STARTING FIREFOX, I DON'T GET THE PROBLEM OF 'NOTHING LOADING'
WHEN STARTING UP IN YAHOO AS MY HOMEPAGE!

I NEEDED TO UPGRADE TO JAVA VERSION 1.6 TO RUN THE KASPERSKY SCANNER.
THIS TOOK MANY ATTEMPTS, FINALLY DOWNLOADING AN OFFLINE PACK OF FILES
AND RUNNING THEM.

TO RUN KASPERSKYI SCANNER:
I DISABLED MCAFEE VIRUS SCAN , AND, I DISABLED A PROGRAM CALLED 'GUARD.EXE'
FROM GRISOFT (WITH TASKMGR.EXE)

I don't actually know if the instafinder malware is still on the system, because I don't dare connect it back to the net till I start the McCafee A.V. program (which, by the looks of things, didn't really help that much!) or till you give me the go-ahead

Well congrats, it appears your system is all clean Are you still noticing any problems? If not, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.


THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis



Now lets uninstall ComboFix:
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK





UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.


Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

  • hosts file:
    • Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them.
    • In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages.
    • We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages.
    • However, it can slow down certain computers.
    • This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
    Download it here. Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here
    If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
    1. [*]Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) [*]Click run [*]In the dialog box, type services.msc [*]hit enter, then locate dns client [*]Highlight it, then double-click it. [*]On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. [*]Click ok
  • Adblock Plus and NoScript are good addons for FireFox.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For more info, check this webpage out.
    See here to choose one if you use only Windows own firewall or don't have firewall at all.


Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Run the spybot and adaware regularly. (Once or twice a week minimum.)
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

I am still working offline - I typed in 'google' in my search bar without all the proper syntax to test for the instafinder malware
The page then tries to redirect to:

Weeks ago, I followed instructions from the instafinder site on how to 'uninstal' but they were bogus instructions, as certain things kept rewriting themselves to the registry.
I also read somewhere that instafinder renames itself to random program names to avoid detection. I followed directions from some site as to what HKEY file to delete and reboot....but it obviously didn't work.

I searched entire C: drive for anything in any file named instaf*. In the past this has resulted in instafnk.* as a resulting bad file. Nothing now. Is there hope for this one?

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be found here: C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt

Remove Spybot again to make sure it won't prevent registry modifications that following steps will do.

Please download WinHelp2002's DelDomains by right-clicking on the following link, and choosing "Save Target As":
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf
Save the file to the desktop. Then go to the desktop, right click on DelDomains.inf, and choose Install. You may not see any noticeable changes or prompts; this is normal. Then please restart your computer.

After restart run registry search again with following search parameter:
Internet Settings\ZoneMap

Post back the results.
 
trouble with requested log

Hi,
I've had trouble with the last procedure:
1. spybot removal, no problem
2. deldomains.inf, noticed a little disk activity
3. after a reboot and running registry search: it opened in wordpad but it took a few minutes to paste it into this box.
The FF browser also kept stalling: "this program not responding" after restarting it many times. (shall I reboot?)

Later, I copied the ZONEMAP log you requested into openoffice.writer which was then able to tell me the file was 22,222 pages long! (wordpad didn't show that!)

shall I search through it for you? because I can't really send it
or shall I run a more refined search?
