And still there.

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

Code:
Driver::
McShield

Save this as "CFScript"

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

CFScriptB-4.gif

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

ok - new logs

a couple issues

Thank you so much.

when I turn on the computer, once booted up, a web browser window immediately opens apparently from trend micro with warning that the computer could be at risk.....that subscription expired. This is bogus but can't seem to stop it. Here's the web address (http://shop.trendmicro.com/tmasy/eolsony.html?X=300&Y=300&WIDTH=690&HEIGHT=480) for the window that pops up.

Also, some discussion about ESET & spybot or recommendation......when you say we're done with the rest of this.

ok, some issues

Ok, here are some issues once actually started using the computer and these may be for another section w/spybot.....?

Got rid of pop-up window by micro trend....had spysubtractor on the computer neither of us knew about......we never added it to the computer, so it was removed under add/remove.

went to control panel and clicked on windows update as I had interrupted an earlier update during this process. I received a message that said: Windows cannot find '(null)'.... and could not get updates

A 'Narrator' program tried to run and I clicked 'stop'......a program that speaks (in english) to people with poor vision. Looked like a windows product but couldn't tell. my sister said she knew nothing about it. It may or may not show up again

Internet Explorer is very very slow upon opening and while surfing.

windows spyware protection (???) pops up regularly saying it found Zango and blocked it. When I clicked on the 'view report' The disc cleanup accessory came up and was automatically started???

That's about it oh-great-one.

"went to control panel and clicked on windows update as I had interrupted an earlier update during this process. I received a message that said: Windows cannot find '(null)'.... and could not get updates"

"Internet Explorer is very very slow upon opening and while surfing."

Uninstalling/reinstalling IE should help for these.

"windows spyware protection (???) pops up regularly saying it found Zango and blocked it. When I clicked on the 'view report' The disc cleanup accessory came up and was automatically started???"

Sounds a bit weird, might be windows defender.

Let's do this:

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Full Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

further advise?

Any further advise? Surprised at result of last log as so much has been done and accomplished so far. Very leery of using afflicted computer but must soon.
Thank you.

I replied to you yesterday :)

MBAM found a lot zango related registry but not much other active things.

Still windows spyware protection popups?

thank you

Shaba,

I could not see your post yesterday (checked several times), in fact until 5 minutes ago I could not see your post from yesterday....or for that matter the post i just sent 10 minutes ago. I thought I'd check one more time and a 4th page suddenly showed up. Absolutely weird.

The Zango pop-up has not showed up since the last fix with malwarebytes. Everything seems to be good now. Just would like some quick advice on what to put on the computer to keep it clean. Can easily get rid of Nod32's ESET. Would like recommendation on firewall, spy/virus.

Again, thanks for all your help.

Just see below for my tips :)

ESET is fine; I can give some free alternatives if you like to.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.

***Please close any instances of Internet Explorer before continuing!***

  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
  • From the drop-down menu, choose English and click on Select.
  • JavaRa will open; click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
  • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location.

Then download and install Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11.

Now lets uninstall ComboFix:

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK

Next we remove all used tools.

Please download OTCleanIt and save it to desktop.
  • Double-click OTCleanIt.exe.
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTCleanIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and re-enable system restore here:

    Windows XP System Restore Guide

Re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:

  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.

  • Update your AntiVirus Software and keep your other programs up-to-date Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
