advice needed

hi
i run avg free spybot and spyware blaster and all programs say everything is ok and running properly , but im pretty sure there is something in there that shouln,nt be. Iwas looking for some advice on downloading another program that would do a scan and see if there is something wrong . I downloaded ad aware and it said it found 15 threats to my p c but i dont know whether to believe what they say , so i guess im lookin for advice on something that i can trust
any help appreciated

im not that computer literate, but for instance if i were to close this window back to the desktop where shortcuts are , instead of icons there would be the symbol for a file (a little wee square box) then a second after,the icon for that paticular shortcut appears over the file symbol ,prior to this happening i did,nt even know there was anything under the icons because that is what was always there straight away , and a website that would open very quickly normaly would open unusually slowly(i could understand this if there were heavy traffic on the website but thats not the case)
the computer does not always do the same thing at the same speed
A while ago my daughter installed bear share and i found out it had installed a tool bar and was running in the background and it slowed down the start up but im sure after i hunted around the computer i managed to get rid of it all ,also i downloaded reimage to see if i could clean and speed my pc up .I have read in a thread on this website that cleaning up your registry is not really recommended for us morons but alas it was to late , anyway im sure i managed to delete that as well
I have dial up so its slow anyway but that is why i like to keep it running at its peak
i dont know if i have given you any info that would help diagnose a problem but maybe ill get lucky thanks in advance

The latest version I assume? What did AdAware detect (Trojan, cookies, MRU, etc.)?

I can't be sure what is happening with the icons problem, because you are describing that they keep changing from blank (it looks like when it's missing the default problem to open the file) and back to normal. It could be a problem within Windows, not necessarily spyware. One problem was installing BearShare. This P2P program tends to install spyware along with it's installation (I don't remember if tells you in the EULA).

If I a page loads slowly, it's explained by the dial-up connection. I was a dial-up user once (using 56kbps; 6KB/sec at max) and page weren't loading that fast either. It should take a good 7-12 seconds to load a page.
